BROOKLANDS. Eng.. July 28. In tricky
weather for airmen, the start waa made
yesterday for the 850,000 prise offered
by the Dully Mall for the 1,010 miles' flight
around England. Nineteen aviators, out of
thirty entered, essayed the first section of
twenty miles to Hendon. Three, however,
failed to get outside of the aerodrome.
Lieutenant John C. Porta of the British

wrecking his machine, but sustaining only
a few scratches. Another Englishman, F.
C. Jenkins, had a similar fall, but escaped
uninjured, while a third Englishman, E. C.
Gordon, was unable to get his machine to
rise. The others got away well, A Beau

other Frenchmen making brilliant starts.
C. T, Weymann, (he American representa

After what looked to be a favorable start, a

soon got away again.

Paiie-Madrld race, wus next, his pace being
even faster than Beaumont's. All de

aviators was 25 minutes. Lieutenant Cam

elapsed time was three and one-half hours.
The American, Weymann. because of hav
