Influence on the stock market today. The
movement was niost pronounced In I'nlted

Amalgamated Cppcr.
After the opening there was a passing
Improvement, particularly In the coalera.
which placed the a hole slightly above
last night's close. The market closed near
the, final figures of yesterday. The
a'rength of St. Paul was the most notable
feature of the ra'lway group, although no
action was taken on the dividend rate by
the executive committee today. Increasing
ease of money Is no longer a bullish factor,
it being now generally recognised that this
condition Is largely, If not wholly, due to
poor business. lioston waa responsible for
bear rumors touching on the copper situa
tion and commission houses at that cen
ter were sellers of the shares. The listing
of American Smelting In Ijondon waa fol
lowed by an abrupt decline here, but with
aubaequent recovery. The
In various telephone Issues at higher

admission by a large banking Interest that
negotiation are afloat tir a consolidation
of many Independent companies.

Totals
CATTLE For a Thursdsy the cattle run
was good, 155 cars being reported In. This
brings the total for the four days up to
19.100 head, as against 20,700 head for the
rame davs last week and II.80O a your ago.
'1 he market has been In very satisfactory
condition all week, and was In fair shape
today.
'Hie demand for beef steers was not so
brink as It has been on other daya this
week, but still there was a fair Inquiry and
rattle which happened to find favor In
buyers' eyes commanded about steady
prices. On the other hand, there was an
undercurrent of weakness and some buyers
though they had to lake off a little. In fact
a good many were quoting it anywhere
from steady to as much as 10c lower In ex
treme cases.
Cows and heifers sold in about the same
way as beef steers, that Is anywhere from
steady to a little lower.
Stockers and feeders did not show very
much change, the desirable kinds at least
yesterday. Inferior
kind were not so much sought after.
owing to the fact that toward the close of
the week the demand Is never so brisk as
It Is at the opening.

sheep and lamb trade this morning were
hardly Important enough to be mentioned.
Excepting a lesa active demand the market
appeared to he little different from that
of yesterday. Backward orders gave prlcea
a weaker tendency, of course, but It wa
possible to obtain steady or at least barely
steady figures for anything good, sheep es
pecially. Bulk sold on this basis, occa
sional strings of lambs ruling a trifle
lower.
Volume of supply wss moderate, consist
ing largely of fed western sheep and lambs.
Uood lambs were wanted, but efforts at
cheapening cost delayed trading, so that
final clearance was rather late. Heat grades
rold at and around 10. with heavier
classes at IS.OO and tinder. As compared
with last week's cloae It will be noted
that salea are generally ateady. dally prices
since Saturday showing neither declines
nor advances of any consequence.
Trade In sheep and yearlings was pos
sibly somewhat more active than the lamb
market, but avoidance of plain and heavy
offerlnga was still evident. Wethers were
scarce and handy weight yearlings were
also hard 10 find. Ewes sold up as high
as $4,011 and heavy yearlings moved around
I4.70r.i4 75. Strictly choice 'breakera" would
probably top at J.l.l.Vy 5.25. These prices and
the ones noted In the list of quotations
average steady to strong when matched
with values last Friday.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 1!.-rteneral en
dorsement of the principal features of tha
Aldrlch plan of financial revision and hlK"
praise for submitting to the public mind a
basis for criticism of monetary reform
were conspicuous In the numerous ad
dresses today of the business men's mone
tary conference, held under the Husplces of
the convention of the Natlonsl Hoard of
Trade.
Secretary of the Treasury MacVeagh.
speaking at the banquet of Ihe conferrm-a
tonight, declared that there la "not a man,
woman or child In the whole nation, rich
or poor, who Is not Involved In the ques
tion of whether or not we shall have a
proper and adequate and safe monetary
system."
He outlined the defects In the present
monetary system and referred lo the Aid
rich nlan charaiterlalna It and the filial
report of the commission, yet to come, a
worthy of "a friendly and cordial consid
eration of whatever they may either ten
tatively or finally propose."
Secretary MacVeagh deplored the various
acknowledged faults of the present money
system, but said the country was not In a
condition of Inability to await reform.
"But why should up wall?" he ssked.
"Why should we. for Instance, hold on to
panics? Why should we cultivate or breed
panics? Why should not we revolt at their
barbarities, their cruelties and their
havocs?"
Secretary MacVeagh laid particular stress
on the Inadequacy and lack of systematlsa
tlon of the money reserve of the country.
"You cannot have reserves that are ef
fective," he continued, "without some form
of centralization. The authority over the
reserves, or a sufficient part of them, must
reside in a centralized form.
"We have about 25.oi banking units.
each community carrying on Its business as
nearly Independently as possible, and cer
tainly with Independent Judgment and In
dependent selfishness when the stres
comrs. What we need Is the general or
ganization of our hanking system, and that
organization cannot be brought about with,
out some recognized central authority.
He concluded by stating that the na
tional banks should have branches abroad
and outlined practically the suggestion
that Is made In the Aldrlch plan.
Representative Weeks of Massachusetts
spoke for the monetary commission Instead
of Senator Aldrlch and called attention lo
the fact that eight of the eighteen men on
the commission retire with the present ses
sion, thereby making difficult the presenta
tion of the final recommendations of tha
commission when ultimately agreed upon.

Dalzell Bill Wins
Out in Committee
on Ways and Means
Twelve Republican Members Pass by
Longworth Measure as Basis for
Taxiff Board Law.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 19.-A permanent
tariff board along Ihe lines of the 1'altell
bill was agreed upon by the twelve re
publicans of the house committee on ways
and means today by a vote of 8 to 4. The
action followed a series of conferences
over the various plans for a permanent
tariff body, which President Taft has
been urging congress to provide for this
session.
Today's action waa taken after a long
discussion of the two leading plans, the
Long worth bill, favored by the adminis
tration, and the Dalxell bill.
1 ne i.origworin phi provmes ior a com
mission of five members at $7,500 each an
nually, and the Dalsell bill three mem
bers, tha chairman drawing $7,600 and tha
other two $7,000 each. The Dalaell bill
authorizes the board to Investigate any
where, though the president's consent Is
necessary to inquiries abroad, and the re
ports are to be made to the president or
the house ways and means committee or
tha senate finance committee whenever
called upon.
The Longworth bill provides for reports
to the president or to either house of con
gress, and for appearance of tha commis
sion before the two committees named If
requested. Tha Dalzell bill does not pro
vide for the powers of requiring attendance
of witnesses, production of books and pa
pers, etc. The republicans of the commit
tee are not yet through with the plan and
a subcommittee of three members wa
appointed to go over the bill favored and
to make any changes deemed essential.
No canvass has yet heen made of the
sentiment of the house, but republican
leaders believe that a bill along the lines
of the Dalzell measure would pass the
house, but are not sanguine as to the out
look In the senate. 1'nd. r no circumstances
Is any plan favored which would vest In
a tariff board or commission the authority
to even recommend rates.
