week. Yesterday afternoon ho was stricken
with paralysis and died early In the even

and a brother, Albert E. Kuony, J'SU Miami

Mr. Kuony life was a romantic on and
life that demonstrated the truth that It
Is ""C road of hard luck Hint has no
turning. After jeais of misfortune and
,,p brok ' an v"
gnlus that had clung to him for year
J and found auceess.
I Mr. Kuony was born
uni i, 1S31, In
8opple-le-bai. canton of Maasevraux. ai
ronatssment of Bolfort. Alsace,' France. 11
was well educated In the town schools and
attended the college at Colniav for th'e
years.
In 1S5I Mr. Kuony came .to th Cnited
Slate. Th vessel was beset with such
severe storms that some passengers died
and other went mad. Because ot th
storms th Journey was slow and provision
gav out several day before New York
City wa reached.
Tanght In New lurk School.
Because of hi Inability to speak the Eng
lish language the young man experienced
difficulty In securing a good position in
New York. He taught school for a whtla
and then tended bar. He managed to sav
enough money to travel overland to Iowa
City, la. The friends he expected tu meet
there were gone, n could not learn whera.
II spilt rails for a while and finally
drifted to St. Louis. Here he secured em
ployment In an architect's office. Then
cholera attacked the city, home way he
lived through the scourge, lull the architect
was gone and he found himself n'lium
helpless. Mr. Kuony accepted an offer of
a position In the Taclflc house, Council
Bluff, made by Satnurl Bayllss. Council
Bluffs at the time bore the name of Kane
vlllc. In November, ls54. Mr. Kuony took a
claim four miles west of the river. It oost
him $25. A little later he concluded It was
worthless and gave It up.
Mr. Kuony took a position ag cook In
Omaha's first hotel, th Douglaa house,
Thirteenth and Harney streets. He cooked
meals for th legislators of the first ter
ritorial legislature. After the legislature
closed Mr. Kuony s employers disposed of
the hotel and offered him ten city lots In
lieu of his $H0 wages. He elected to ac
cept the cash, not foreseeing the great
growth of land values In this section.
I Second Omaha Weddlna.
He was married In 1S5 to Miss Reglna
Maag. another employe of the, Douglaa
house. The marriage was the second ever '
performed r Omaha. The pair started a
hotel, but It was not successful. Mr. Kuony
tried real estate. He succeeded. Then panic
In 1HT.7 swept away all he had made. II
traveled to Denver and other western cities,
but always was pursued by hard lurk.
In 1W7 they went to Calhoun, Neb.,
alerted a store.
Then they prospered. The store
maintained for twenty years, until
and
was
1SS7,
when Mr. Kuony retired. During his i evi

times was mayor, city councilman and city,
treasurer.
Mr. and Mrs. Kuony removed to Omaha
In lbST. purchased property and built a
home at Twenty-second and Maple streets,
whera they have since resided.
Mr. Kuony was a member of the Omaha
