His speech, in part, follows: x "What do you want of that vast and worthless area, that region of savages and wild beasts, of deserts, of shifting sands and whirling wind, of dust, of cactus and prair c dogs? To what use could we ever hope to put thse great deserts and those endless mountain ranges, impenetrable and covered to their very base with eternal snow? What can we ever do with the western coas a coast of 3,000 miles, rock bound, cheerless and uninviting "? That region of savages and wild beasts, of deserts and prairies, of shifting sands and whirling winds of dust has been turned into veritable granary and garden spot. Those impenetrable mountain ranges are yielding up vast treasures, and today they are the nation's playgrounds, full of sublime beauty and grandeur, where man may rest and gain health and strength. That 3,000 mile coast has hundreds of resort cities that are today the "mecca" of a whole world of pleasure seekers. 4 .
