HELOTS ON STBIKING WATER Mark Hoaver, an Ion Farmer, Dives lato Deep Cistern and Holds the Kalntln Woman Tfn j Help Comri. "I Just dove In head first and when I came to the surface, grabbed the woman around the waist and treaded water until they let down a ladder." This was; the simple statement made by Mark Houver, after he had rescued a drowning woman from a deep cistern this morning at 10.30 aclock. at 1430 South Sev enteenth street He did not seem to think (hat he had done anything out of the ordi nary and when complimented upon his bravery, merely said, "I Just had to do tt." The woman who was rescued was Anna Homella. a domestic employed at the home of Ferdinand Streltx, 1430 South Seven teenth street. Shortly, after 10 o'clock she went to a cistern In-the rear of the house to draw some water It Is supposed that when she reached 'the edge of the high curbing a sudden d.sli to commit suicide elied her hud she' plunged headlong Into the gaping mouth. After she struck the water her screams attracted the attention of neighbors and Houver rushed from the home of his sister next door, and, clearing a low fence with a bound, reached the edge of th cistern. He, saw the woman struggling in the water, and mak ing frantlo attempts to ' grap the slimy lds of the well. He threw off his coat and hat and plunged headflrnt into the water. The water is about twenty-five feet deep, and as he came to the surface he grasped the woman's waist, and held her, now uncon scious, while he treaded water until Lyman ttlacman amt'Mrs.C. Marverd, neighbors, came to his aid., They tied a rope around a ladder and let It down, and Houver ascended, carrying Miss Homvlla In his arms. ' The woman was taken Into the house and Police Surgeon Bishop was called. After working over her for thirty minutes she revived and was pronounced o. :, of danger. Why Miss Homella should attempt to take her life Is not known. She has been In the employ of Mr. Strelta for more than a year and has always shown a cheerful disposition. She seldom received company and seemed contented with her home. As fur as Is known she has never received (entlemen callers, and her employer does not think that a love affair la Involved.1 This morning, however, Mr. Strelts says ihe appeared to be hysterical, but he could not acount for her condition. ilark Houver, the rescuer, lives at Sallx, la., and arrived In the city Tuesday night tor a visit with his sister, Mrs. Marverd, 1712 South Seventeenth street He Is a farmer and a small man physically.
