CHICAGO. May J0.-A ray of light ws
flsrhed Into at least one building trades
strike In Chicago today. Incidentally there
wss reference to the methods of trsdes
unionism In Sen Francisco.
These features were presented when the
state opened Its esse against Martin B,
(Skinny) Madden.N president of the Asso
ciated Building Trades council of Chicago.
and his associate. P. A. Pouchot and M.
J. Boyls. all of whhm are charged with
conspiracy to extort' $1,000 from the Jos
eph Kllcka company, a Chicago concern
which fell afoul of strike on Ua plsnt
last winter while It was In course of con
duction.
At told In Judge McSurely's court, the
strike was called by Madden, from hla
automobile, and ths order hit, amongst
150 others, Jacob Dublanski, a cement tin
Isher, who refused to walkout because he
had a wife' and alx children to care fnr.
When the men came and called the strike
what did they tell you 7" Dublanski was
asked.
Just told us there was a strike and we
should quit."
Then whstT"
'Then I told them I had a wife snd six
children, and one of the men asked him
who was going to pay for our lost time."
"And then?"
"Then he went to ths foreman and
stopped us."
Henry Blaum snd Stephen Btelsky, slso
cement Workers, gave similar testimony.
Story ot Alleged Extortion.
The story of alleged extortion, ss told by
D. L. Frsser, a construction engineer em
ployed by Post A Maehler, architects of the
Kllcka plant, snd somewhat softened by
Emll Kllcka, ' president of the Joseph
Kllcka company, has to do with the auto
mobile, diplomatic negotiations and the al
leged passing of money In a down-town
saloon, and In substance follows:
The blow fell on November 18, tor no
apparent reason. The Job seemed "regu
lar" and Mr. Kllcka sent Mr. Frsser to
Investigate. The latter saw Boyle, who
said that the strike hud been called he
cause there was a nonunion man working
on It. He added, when asked how the
matter could be settled, that Kllcka would
have to see Madden. Ths following day
Kllcka and Frsser waited for some time
In ths saloon, until Madden And his motor
csr. arrived, after which Madden and
Kllcka entered a little private office at
the end of the bar. The Interview waa In
terrupted by a trip to the bank by Kllcka
and Eraser, who returned with $200, which
was. It Is slHged. given to Boyle to com

ing the strike, Mr. Kllcka hoping that
Boyle would bring ths trouble to an end.
Boyle, however, said that ths settlement
ws up to Msdden. Thers was anpther In
terview with Madden In the little office at
the snd of the bar, but on the termination
of It Messrs Frsser and Kllcka In their
testimony differed somewhat. Fraser de
clared that Madden had demanded $1,500 aa
the price of putting the men back at work,
and then Kllcka emerged from the office
cursing earnestly and branding the price
as an outrage. Kllcka's version was that
he told Madden the pries "was a little
high."
At any rate ths pries was not agreed upon
at that time. . Following Fraser and
Kllcka. George 8. Andres, a construction
engineer, was'plsced on the stand. Ac
cording to hla own and. Kllcka's testimony,
Kllcka gave him $1,000. with which to settls
the strike, Andres hsvlng approached ths
former with a statement that It could bs
done for that sum. Meanwhile some
trouble had brewed between the new man
and Madden. "I told him I wanted to set
tle ths strike and asked If he would ac
cept $500," testified Andres. "He answered
'No,' and then I offered him $760.
" 'Nix.' he answered. I asked him if
sl.000 would do."
"And what did he answer?"
" 'Bring up the dough,' so I went to
Kllcka, got the check, and got ten $100
bills at ths bank. It was ths night before
Madden showed up, and then I offered him
the money. 'H'-w am I to know the strike
will be called off if I give you the money,'
I asked htm. 'Don't worisr ' hs said, snd
then I said, 'Here's your'Soney.' He said,
'I never took any moneji .om you,' and I
said I kntw hs didn't."
Andres smiled ss he described the fares.
He ssid hs asked Madden what to do with
the money and the latter told him to throw
It 6n ths floor or on the desk. Andres laid
ft on ths desk si.d Invited the labor leader
out .Ao have a drink. The latter acqulescej
and as they moved out Madden dropped a
blotter over ths pile and shoved it In his
pocket.
"The next day the strike wss called oft
snd the men returned to work."

"ptdn't you tell Madden about unions In
San Francisco, and didn't you tell him that
you had put them out of business there,
and would do the same thing here?" Andrea
waa asked.
He admitted the talk, but denied ths
threat.
"Did you say to Pouchot that lie could
make a lot of money If he knew his job
snd didn't he say hs wss sstlafted with
