NETW TORK, May Tie signal con traction In the voiuine of the sui.lt market wa the most notable fact aoout It today. Dullness oven-amo tue dealings after the experimental at tempt to continue the advance of yesterdav. When It became man ifest that no important operations were fol lowing this ripe In prices It wns concluded that the sponsors for the market were sut lufled with the protection they had afford ed against t.ie acme depression at the end ot Inst week. Their manif-st disin clination to follow the advance with buy ing prompted the late fresh outpouring at stocks. Some Influence was allowed to the sale of Chicago. Burlington A Qulncy bonds In canning the early advance in pries. The Intenilon to issue the?e bonds had not been heard of when the .market eloied yes terday, and the subscription to $.. tw.O 0 was announced almost as soon as bus!, less had commenced. The subscription price was as compared with the art. at wnicti Pennsylvania Consolidated 4s were sold. Modtiylng conditions In the comparison were tha large amount of the t.ual mi thorlxed for the new Issue. $3.ot.om. being larger than has ever hef,.n been authorized bv an American railroad, and the lower lien of the Burlington bond. The difference wa Indicated in 'he price at which tne new bonds were sold, "when issued on the curb. ' the first a.e at US being subsequently shaded to below 97, while in the case of the Pennsylvan a hon 1 par was reached liefore the subscriptions were closed. The -(Hick saie of the offer ing and the price realized for It wr Judged by bond men to represent an im provement over the bond market position, as compared with the Pennsylvania sale. The slated purpose of the Burlington issue to reimburse the company's treasury for outlays already made for betterments and additions would heip to explain the persist ence of reports of an extra distribution of Northern Pacific and Great Northern mock, as those companies would profit as Bur lington stockholders. While this incident was thus given a favorable interpretation, it proved powerless to renew the upward movement of stock prices. Rather, it was taken advantage of to resume the selling to take profits, as was the growing ten dency on favorable news announcements lust week. London waa a free seller of stocks here early in the day. Reports of flood dam age and the sensitiveness of the commodi ties markets to crop news were not re garded favorably. Declines in discount rates In London and Berlin marked the decreasing force of the probable demand of gold on New York. At th same time, western money markets reported a grtdual change in the course of the currency movement, which marks the approach of tha crop moving season. Any further de cline In Interest rates here seems to be arrested, although there is no positive rise In rates vet to record. The lata break In prices was a direct response, to the con trary movement in the price of wheat. Bonds were Irreg-ilar. Total sales, par value, 32.2W.O0O.
