NEW YORK. April 9 The bewilderment In which the financial world has been groping for over a week, over the Erie problem was amply explained by the dis closures over night of the extent 4 which the principals In the woiklng out of the problems had been confused In their intentions and open to the failure 01 me whole project. Wall street has clung to a conviction that the Erie's hankers must have safeguarded their plan by measures to take care of unsssenllng notes in addition to havlnor assured themselves of the awsent of a sufficient number of the note holders to leave only an unlmpnrlant residue to be cared for. Any assumption that such pre cautionary measures had been neglected nave been met hy the assertion that a oe- slre to force a receivership for the company would be a fair Inference from such a state of affairs. Yet the event proves that such was exactly the state or affairs ana ine Impression made by the knowledge of such an attitude on the part of the financial interest which has been accredited with freatest teal and Influence In the conserva lon of affairs was not pleasant. This im pression was strongly offset by the deter mination with which means were tendered for the rescue of the Erie situation by JK. H. Harrlman. Here also there was ground for some mystification over motives as be tween the aggressive preservative attitude of Mr. Harrlman towards a property In which the Morgan Influence Is recognised iu 13 uuuiinmii iibhkwiiibi. 1110 seeuiiug Indifference of tho Morgan interests at to the fate of the property. The remem brance of bitter contests In the past between these high financial powers. added test to the canvass of the politics of finance which might be supposed to lie back of these developments. That the Erie waa saved from a receivership and that the advance of relief funds expressed con fidence, not only In the property, but In the financial prospect In general were the results summed un to be accepted from the episode as a whole. The effect In the stock market foe tha day, however, wss of slow growth and was not uninterrupted. The uneasy wavering of the prloe movement might be regarded as a fair reflection of the conflict of opinion shown In the development of the Erie settlement. Depressing Influences were another decline In the London copper market ana renersiea assertions that a eut In prices of steel products was In contempla tion. United States steel wss affected by those reports, and did not share the rally In prices in spite of the renewed assurances from the chairman of the board of cor poration, Issued In a public statement that no reductions in prevailing prices of steel are contemplated. The rise In Brooklyn Transit wss attributed to Its increased prospects for traffic by reason of the de feat of the Albany bill attainst race track gambling. Foreiem exchanges advanced sharply, partly Influenced by remittances in reaempiion or 1110 matured Erie note Is sue. Bterling exchanao at Paris declined and gold continued to go out to Paris from London, Increasing the likelihood of ship ments to Paris from New York. Bonds were firm; total sales, par value. Cows and heifers seemed to be In very fair demand and they were the first cattle to sell. As the offerings were far from large, the most of the oow stuff changed hands In very fair season In spite of the fac". that the market was not active. The prices paid did not show any material change as compared with yesterday, so that the market was quotably steady. A usual the latter part of the week, there waa not very much inquiry for feeders or stock cattle. Fortunately there were very few cattle of that description In first hands. Speculators had plenty on hand. The foellng was not . lnuclt different, than yesterday, certainly no stronger. Beer steers were tne last cattle to attract the attention Of the buyers. The packers did not appear to be In very urgent need of cattle and shippers were also backward about taking hold. All buyers, without ex ception, started out bidding prices mat were sharply lower than yesterday and the trade was a drag all tha morning.
