STOCKS COME CUT IN ALL DIRECTIONS Entire List Is Swept to Lower Level by Rash to Pell Many "peeo lators Tara to Grala Markets. NEW YORK. Msy 8 ft was only after the announcement of the Union Pacific financial plan that today's stock market showed any evidence of life. It then sprang Into animation wtih acute weak neas. The largest activity uf the day was In Union Pacific and the dealings In thst stock took on a degree of ex citement as the time for the meeting of the directors approached. The rise to above 149 occurred after the directors were In session, but before the financial plan was publicly announced. It ran off abruptly after the publication of the 1 Ian to 104. The Isaue of convertible bonds had been foreseen, but a rate of Interest at 4 per cent has been foretold In place of the 4 per cent announced. The placing ot the price ot conversion Into the stock st 175 Is a higher figure than had been anticipated and the offer of the bonds to stockholders at 90 seems not to offset these speculative disappointments. The new preferred ctock offered to Southern Pacific stockholders at par also caused mixed sentiments by reason of the priority of the claims of the new stock to earnings over those of the common ' stock. The large body of new securities thus to be brought on the market had Its part also In reviving acute apprehensions of the larger absorption of capital by railroad corporations in an already stagnated con dition of capital supply. The effect on the whole market was Immediate. Stocks came out In all directions and swept the list to a materially lower level throughout. Previous to this episode the whole market was dull to a verge of stagnation and ertered little call for serious discussion. Prices moved fitfully and Irregularly and there was no very constant tone to the market at any time. The sluggish drift was in feeble sympathy with the upward or downward movement of special stocks. Continental stock markets were closed for' a holiday and this was supposed to subtract something from the activity of the market, although participation from these suuicea of lute have been very slight. More Important Is the diversion of Interest on the pa-t of habitual specu lative contingent to the commodities mar kets as Indicated by the large dealings in wheat and cotton. The fears for the crops continue a depressing factor In stocks, although this consi.ia nlon waa not of much effect today, . monthly report of the condition of thtv ,nn crops. to be published tomorrow bv me Agricul tural department Is - expected surely to nave an important influence In forming opinion on the crop outlook. The agree ment reported from Albany lor the sup port 01 tne purine utilities 0111 was a factor In the early weakness In the stocks of New York corporations. There was sorhe further pressure also on New York central, which was a sympathetic Influ ence on the market. Then the strength developed In Union Pacific, and In Smelt ing sifted the tide of speculative senti ment for a time. The market waa trivial, however, under late outpouring of storks under the Influence of the Union Pacific announcement. Money conditions showed small change, although rates for time loans were reported somewhat firmer. Sterling exchange continued to decline and widened he margin against any profit In exporting notes. Discount continued to de cline In London and the Bank of England reported-a moderate recuperation in con ditions. Bonds were steady. Total sales par value $1,400,000. United States bonds were unchanged on calL Number of sales and closing quotations on stocks were: gules. HUB. Lew. Clnea. Adams Express AuliiniMd Copper 10.100 Am. C. A F 00 17 Am. C. At thu same time some of the buyers did not seem to bs very anxious for cattle, with the result that the geneial market opened slow and It waa late before very much business was transacted. Ths strength that waa apparent In spots, at least, yesterday was gone, so that prices were no more than steady ss a general thing with Tuesday. Cows and heifers were Bteady at least and In some cases sellers who happened to have what buyers wanted thought they se cured strong pikes as compared with yes terday. Of this number one half was consigned through without being offered for sale. In other wcrds there were only ten or a doxen fresh londs on sale. A conslilerable proportion of the offerings consisted of heavy wethers.- As heavy stuff Is not In, overly good demand st the present time tho market on eveiything unBwerlnir to that description was flow and the feel ing eaaier. Buyers, In fact, seemed In clined to bear the market a little In aplte of the fact thnt the light receipts were against them. While heavy stuff, as noted, was Blow and weak, there was a fair de mand for handy light killers and the market on anything of thnt dencrlptlon could safely be quoted as steady.
