C, March U. 1901. E. Rosewater, Esq., Omaha, Neb.: My Dear Sir: I am In receipt of yours of the 9th Inatant and contents fully noted. I cannot tell you how disappointed w all are at the situation In your state. It seems almost criminal that after such a victory the fruits of it should be jeopard ised by the ambitions of any candidate. So It seems to m that the time is near at hand when som one must rise to the emergency of the situation and And a way out of the trouble. The president talks with me every day about it end I need not say Is very anxious that something b done. I have avoided doing anything that would make any trouble or cause any criticism from any of the candidates. Mr. Payne and I have suggested one more ef fort at a caucus, on the two-third plan. cover he- results at their efforts. Owing to difficulty in tunneling through the 'brick wall they atd not, get to the open' until daylight, when they were seen by Janitor Cooper, who was on his way to the court house. An alarm was immediately given and the sheriff's office turned out enmassa. A general alarm was rung In at 9:80. At 9 o'clock Former Deputy McCormlck, with Messrs. Oadd and Mulnell, tracked the fugitives to a cornfield northwest of town and cam upon them lying down. Before resistance could be offered McCormlck cov ered them with a shotgun, lined them up in single file and marched them back to the county Ja.ll. Ryan, Martin and Wade Colfax. F. M. Cob.. J. W. Falling in this I know of no other solution, unless to . take up an entire new set of candidates. This latter alternative was not suggested to Mr. Schneider, nor do I want to propose It If It would cause any bad feeling. I have suggested no names to any one aa compromise candi date. But I do say that if you can be the means of solving this question it will give you a position and prestige in the party which does not often - fall to th lot of a man In politic. Knowing as you do th Interest I took in the campaign in your atate In both presi dential campaigns, you will appreciate how anxious I am on this subject, and, know ing you as I do.
