The successJul man and his brtde left for the caat to spend their honey, mooa with Old Virginia, relatives of the bride. The men werti rivals not only for a TliU but for their party's nomination for shriifT uf Greenup county as well. The contest ant. Tom Wttherow and Fred Wamouk. enweal iaSTa the award of both prise to the people of the township wherein both had been reared. They held a special ejec tion to settle the question. The best man to take both bride and a clear flt-ld for the nomination The younc ladjr most interested presided over the ballot box a both clerk and judge. The township Is not densely populated, but few over 100 voters live wlihln lis borders. WJU.erow Is the son of the richest land owner in the township. With his father he controls most of the fertile valley land and much of the broken hills. Wamock is a country teacher. Both have been active in politics, and the two have been able, by working together, to control the delega tions of the county conventions for several rs. Wrnock and the young girl, alias Ada Ckvlghton. have been friend for eon. years. He grew up with her and they attented school together. Their friendship was from childhood, and their neighbors never considered them In a matrimonial light. Some weeks ago Wltherow asked Mlas Creightou for her hand.' She told War nock about It, and be grew bold, and n vealrd his own secret love. Neither man received a decided answer, and Wamock found that he could not hope as a country teacher to outstrip the land owner, ad mittedly the best catch in the township. Then the thought came to him that lie might be nominated for sheriff. 8) he am bled oft to the county seat and confided to the "boes." Judge Ieonard, his ambition to win that nomination. "Sorry. Fred, but Tom Wltherow was here yesterday, and I told him If he could get hi delegation he would have my sup port. But then, you and Tom have al ways worked together. Buppose you two Ms it up as to who is to run?" Sad at heart, the young school teacher returned home. At church Sunday be saw Ada Crelghton sitting In the Wltherow seat beside bis rival, and bis blood boiled. That night he called at the Crelghton horn and asked the girl If she would marry him If be won the nomination for sheriff, and she replied that she would: but added that there were others who were confident of winning the office. It should be stated here that to secure the Maloneton delega tion at the primaries Is equivalent to nomi nation at the convention. The county commltti.-e was slow about calling the primaries. So an agreement was entered Into for a special electfun. Tt iu agreed that Mlaa Crelghton should pre side at the ballot box as judg and clerk. When election day rolled around th rivals were on hand with their printed ballots, Wltherow' ticket were printed on tinted paper; Warnock' on plain whit. Wlth erow cast the first ballot of the day. It was for himself. Warnock worked hard, and at noon was within balling distance of bis wealthy rival, though soon after dinner the pink tickets seemed to come in bunches, and It leokej as though the school teacher wa doomed. Mis Crelghton kept close mental tab and noticed each shift In the position. Her brother, Jack, aged 10. also kept count of the ticket a they came In. The boy loved hi school master, and he wanted wh'te ballot to com fast. The polls were to close at 4 o'clock. At I p. in. the rivals were five vote apart, and there were only few more outstanding. At 1:30 the Wilson boys, from the uppvr part of tb township, cam In and caat wire vote ail white. Tim dragged, and It seemed that the flv ndnutea that now remained would pass before any others could com. But across field came a party of three In tow of Warnock. They cast two whlta and one pink vote. On more Whit vote would tie the score. What thent The judg ot elections must decide the winner. That wa the agreement.
