Th numlxT of fire hydranta Installed ana
In use In Omaha Is 1,627, averaging In cost
about $U apiece. For the half year ending
December 81. 1904, the city has ordered
Judgment confessed for a hydrant bill In
favor of the Omaha Water company
amounting to $46,717.97. Thla would show
the average annual coat per hydrant, at
$61,04, but some iydtants charged for ww
In less than tho full half year. M"t of th
hydrants cost $60 a year. The original 260,
located In the business and old residence
part of town cost the city $11 per annum
apiece, according to the terms of th con
tract mad when they were put In more
than twenty years ago. Small hydrant
located midway In blockn cost $10. Except
these two clashes the uniform chsrg 1
$i a hydrant.
The demand for new hydrant arls
principally from the fact that the residents
In the newly built section of the city ar
without water service, for the company will
not extend Its mains unless the flr plug
arc put In each 400 feet along.
I.oentlnsr New Hydrant.
For a long term of year prior to 1901 no
new fire hydrants were placed, because th
limitation of $100,000 on the water fund
would not permit It. In 1903 the Howell
ailhert compulsory water purchase . bill
abolished the water fund, and since then
payment for hydrants hns been mad
through Judgment confessed by the city.
The clamor for new hydrants In parts of
the city newly built up ha always been
strong and early In 1904 the council, after
consulting with the city attorney, began
to order new hydranta at various location.
The attorney ruled that this could be don
by the city, allowing the water company to
take chances In collecting rentals for th
new hydrants pending the purchase of th
water work. Up to date tho council has
ordered 126 new hydranta, of which forty-
seven have been placed In position and put
In use. Mayor Moore and Acting Mayor
Zimman steadily have vetoed hydrant ordi
nances on the ground that there were no
funds to pay for them. The water com
pany has not acted with any great hast
in locating the hydrant and building new
pipe lines to them In the face of th ap
praisement proceedings. Ncverthelea th
orders of the council have been obeyed in
the main and hydrants were being placed In
position when the cojd weather aet in In
January.
Mors Are Needed.
,Although nearly $100,000 Is spent annually
for hydrant rent, officers in position to
know auy that the city needs mora flr
plugs. City Engineer Rosewater any:
"There are many residence district built
up within the last few years that need hy
drants for fire protection, and In order to
secure the extension of water mains, for
the water compony will not extend ths
pipes unless there are hydrant to termi
nate them. The price, $00 a year, I ex
tortionate. It costs the water company
about $400 to make a 400-foot extension and
put In a hydrant. Sixty dollars a year
means 15 per cert return on-the Invest
ment without. In many cases, furnishing a
drop of water to the city from one end of
the year to the other.
"Many hydrants now In place are prac
tically worthless to the Are department be
cause the pipes leading to them., are tod
small. Some time ago. I had blank pre
pared for ordinance calling for eight-inch
mains, but this figure has been stricken
out and six inches substituted, a This I
wrong, but the council has permitted It all
along in ordering new hydrants.". f ' '
Fire Chiefs Opinion. ' " -
On the hydrant question. Fire Chief Baiter
ays: "We haven't nearly enough hydranta
down town. With few exceptions there la
one only for each city square, or block.
! the location being usually the northwest
corner, or on the southwest corner of th
Intersection. We should have at least two
for every block, or so as to make two at
each Intersection diagonally from each
other. It would be better to have one on
every corner, and In some cases on In tha
middle of the block. ' Kansas City Is a
equipped. More hydrants would enable OS
to get Into action quicker In fighting firs;
to use less hose and get better result from
the st roams, and by obviating the necessity
of long distance hose lines, preventing tying
up street car and other traffic. I have no
particular complaint to make regarding th
hydrant protection in the outlying dis
trict. It is not so Important aa down
town."

When Prof. Gauthler wa asked to send
