CHICAGO, an. 2S.-Anxlety by short
a" I lorn to cover their trade before the Sun
day holiday waa the cause of an advance
of 1HJ today In the price of May wheat.
The upturn waa aided by an active demand
from the bull crowd. The close waa strong,
with May a higher. May corn Rained
SW4c, and oats c. Provisions cloned at
yesterday's final figures.
Wheat holdings appeared to he more
strongly concentrated In a few hand today
than before the heavy liquidation of the
laat forty-eight hours. In addition foreign
marketa did not respond to the break here
vesierrlav. Am a rnneuuftire opening quo
tations on May were unchanged to o
higher, at "t0c. An effort on the part
of shorts to cover resulted In an early
advance to 91Sillc. Considerable long
wheat came out on the bulge and the price
went back to lc. During the remainder
of the aeaslon there were frequent ralllea
and declines, the leading long adding ma
terially to hla Una on each reaction. The
clone waa strong, with price well up to
the high point, tlnal figure on May being
at SlHaflWc. The July dull very advanced
In sympathy with May and closed lfqUda
higher, at Wfc(fllJV4c. Clearances of wheat
and flour were equal to &w,CM bushel.
1'rlmarv receipts war - 639.0U0 bushela.
agalnat 691,2t bushels a year ago. Minne
apolis, Liuluth and Chicago reported re
ceipts of sn cars, against thl cars last wee
and 444 cars a year ago.
The corn market was Influenced more or
less by tbe tone In wheat. There was con
siderable liquidation by local Holders going
on. Toward the middle of the session the
market became active on demand from com
mission houses and an attending rise In
values resulted. The good shipping demand
was a minor bull factor, while more favor
able weather had an opposite effect. The
olose waa strong, with May at 46 after
opening a shade to fee higher at 43'4!g-um,a
and selling between 49a'u 4S)N,c. Local re
celpta war 278 cars, four of contract
grade.
The feature In trading In oata was mod'
erate buvlng bv a tiromlnent commission
house. There were not many oats on the
market and prices were firm at a small
advance. After opening unchanged to He
higher. May ranged between 41VU41T4c and
42VrZV,c, closing at 42Vo. Local receipts
were lit cars.
Provisions were firm early In sympathy
With a stronger hog marleet. Pit traders
and commission houses were the best buy
ers, with English houses suDDlvIng the de
mand. The small advance was lost late
In the day on outside liquidation and the
close was steady, with May pork and lard
unmanned at sia.izH and 7.25. Kins were

There la general agreement that the rapid

reflects no such operation and It Is said
on good authority that Interior deposi
tories have not yet received notice of call
on government funds. The banking opin
ion seems to be that the call for money
has so far declined as to promise a ple
thoric condition on the local money mar
ket In the immediate future.
The growing demand for bonds has been
of no small Influence In Improving the
outlook for securities, as pressure of cap
ital for employment In railroad mort
gages la a not unusual prelude to an ex
panding market for stocks. The extraor
dinary demand ftr United States Steel
second 6s and for Rock Island bonds,
while overshadowing the bond market, has
not precluded a good demand at advanc
ing prices for higher grade bonds. Quota
tions on call for government bonds have
nor chanred durlna the week.

CHICAGO, Jan. 23. For the third time
In the last two weeks fire today attaoked
the Grand Palace hotel, North Clark and
Indiana streets. Investigation Is being
mads to learn, if possible, the source of
the three Area One of ths strange fea.
tures noted In each Instance Is that the
flames were discovered before they had
made much headway and that all of the
fires occurred about ths same hoar.
Ths fire today was discovered by Edward
Bartlett, a guest, who notified Clerk Cler-

and notified the occupants. There were 150
1 persons In the hotel at the time and but
few of them showed signs of. fright Clerk

ths building and finding every person aware
of the threatened peril, took charge of the

The small ranchmen and homesteaders
Uvlng along ths tributaries of ths Moreau,
Cheyenne tend Bad rivers. In the western
part of Bouth Dakota, are experiencing a
plague of beavers. Owing to ths rapidity
with which the animals have increased In
numbers ths state law prohibiting ths kill
ing or trapping of beaver Is becoming very
obnoxious. Under ths protection of the law
beavers have multiplied very rapidly In
the region. referred to.
On all the branches of the Upper Moreau
river the beavers have long since cut down
and trimmed the limbs of the young cot
ton woods, the bark of which they use for
food, while the remaining portion is utilized
In the construction of their dams. Having
completed ths destruction of the cotton
woods the beavers have now turned their
attention to tbe young asn ana other vane-
