NEW TORK, Jan. 23 Today's stock market wae Irregular, but the halting movement waa not more marked than mlgkt be expected from the profit taking which naturally resulted from the week a conditions, aided by several points of posi tive strength. After the publication or the bank statement there waa an effective rally and the market closed steady, with no Important loss on the day. The dealers In the market-seemed satisfied with the Increase In surplus reserves, and were not Impressed with the staggering ad vances shown In the various items, which broke all records in several Instances. There la general agreement that the rapid loan expansion now la progress repres ents largely a transfer of obligations from trust companies and outside banks to clearing house Institutions. The state ments of New York trust companies not yet complete, for the six months ending December 81 last, show a, net recreaae In deposits of 3102,876.033 for thirty-five com panies reporting, which represents a re duction in proportion of liability upon bank reserves, aa trust companies keep their reserves largely on deposit with the banks. But the suggestion Is also made that the present heavy , Influx of funds front the Interior to New York may repre sent In part operations by the treasury In transfer of government deposits from Inferior depositories to New York to be drawn on In making the Pajiama canal payment. The item of government de posits with the New York banks, however, reflects no such operation and It Is said on good authority that Interior deposi tories have not yet received notice of call on government funds. The banking opin ion seems to be that the call for money has so far declined as to promise a ple thoric condition on the local money mar ket In the immediate future. The growing demand for bonds has been of no small Influence In Improving the outlook for securities, as pressure of cap ital for employment In railroad mort gages la a not unusual prelude to an ex panding market for stocks. The extraor dinary demand ftr United States Steel second 6s and for Rock Island bonds, while overshadowing the bond market, has not precluded a good demand at advanc ing prices for higher grade bonds. Quota tions on call for government bonds have nor chanred durlna the week. For the third time In the last two weeks fire today attaoked the Grand Palace hotel, North Clark and Indiana streets. Investigation Is being mads to learn, if possible, the source of the three Area One of ths strange fea. tures noted In each Instance Is that the flames were discovered before they had made much headway and that all of the fires occurred about ths same hoar. On all the branches of the Upper Moreau river the beavers have long since cut down and trimmed the limbs of the young cot ton woods, the bark of which they use for food, while the remaining portion is utilized In the construction of their dams. Having completed ths destruction of the cotton woods the beavers have now turned their attention to tbe young asn ana other vane- ties of valuable timber found In that I HI YE CCIIlielTEED WD PAID fiO TO sUeUUS ISYESTCel.
