CORN AND WHEAT BOTH DROP SLIGHTLY Data Go Vp Qnr4er, While Pro- Ten. Tveenly Cent ' Filaher. CHICAGO, Jan. 12. There vn only a fair trade In wheat today, and althoiiRh the new In sreneral wan bullish the cIomi was easier. May helna; 4i4' lower. May corn wti 4'4c lower, while oats closed Lc higher. Provisions were atronn. the Mav delivery rinsing- from l"c to 2"c higher. Wheat wan rather unsettled ami In spite of bullion new, which caused a firmer feelln early In the day, the tendency was toward lower prices, Influenced largely uy a continued liquidation by local lona. A report that a ronelderable amojnt of wheat was being worked for shipment to Franco wa an early .bull factor. a were the small receipt and heavy rains In Ar gentine. There was also a good caxh de mand and reports of a heavy export busi ness at the seaboard helped price late In the day- May opened 4c to Wic lower at 7'i..764n to 764c and quickly sold up to 764c. Helling by pit traders caused a decline to 7i-V"754c, when there ti an advance to 764c. fnloac'.lng by longs hrouxht about another break and the price went down to 7543 754c, with the close 4 4j'4t; lower at 75 t ToTttc. There waa an In creased visible supply of 37.0i bushels, compared with the. decrease a year ago of gn.oiiii bushels. The amount on passage ahowed an Increase of 2.184.0 bushels. Clearance of wheat and flour were equal to i.,in bushel. Primary receipts' were bM.floO bushels, against 1,(2.(U bushel a year ago. Minneapolis and ' Duluth re ported receipt of 361 cars, which, with local receipt of 38 cars none of contract grade made total receipts for the three polnta of 3W cars, against H67 cars last week and 1,018 car a year ago. Trading In corn was extremely dull and the market wan featureless, with prior barely steady. A good cash demand was the main atrenKthening influence, although a fair export demand also favored the bull side. The weather was favorable for the mcvcnrvnt. but the receipts were only mod erate, due to the car situation. The weak ness in wheat late In the day was a de pressing factor and caused an easy tone at the close May being 41i4c lower at 13-V, after selling between 43Se and 437c Ljcal receipts were 374 cars, with two of contract crade. The oata pit was almost deserted and very little trading was done, but In spite of the extreme dullness the market was firm. A good cash demand, together with buying by a pron.lnent long, was the chief sup porting Influence. The close was firm, with Mav 4c higher at 34c, after selling be t'vuen 344c. and 34V(3474c. Local receipts were fair at 210 cars. l'rovlslonr opened strong on a marked decreaae In receipts of hog and higher prices at the yards. The receipt at the yard were lestrlcted by heavy snow in the west, which delayed shipment. A good demand from packers for lard and ribs, together will, buying by outsiders, caused a further advance, and the market closed strung, with May pork up 20c at 816.324. May lard waa loc higher fit $9.52, while ribs were lis.(174e higher at 8S.95. Kstlmated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat, 75 cars; corn, 610 cars; oata, 19.1 cars; hogs, 86,JO head. Jan. 12-The demand for money waa airunif In the market today, owing to the fact that there will be heavy calls during the week, dividend payments and Stock exchange requirements. Dis counts hardened. Heavy Sale Halt Spernlatloa and Indnee Seml-Staanatlon, NEW YORK. Jan. 12. -The large selling which developed on Saturday, and which wa rencveu after the opening today, served to take the vigor out ot speculation and the stock market sank into a condition of semi-stagnation during the afternoon, with an occasional downward dip In price '1 he market closed with one -of tnose sel.lng movements In force, making the last prices about the lowest of the nay. There was nothing In the news to offer a rational ea pianation ot the decline unless It might be a rather less liberal disposition on the part 01 the banks and truxt companies in the matter of placing ehort time loans. Tho Movements of cash, so far as known to too puolic, continued to Increase the reserves ot the banks. Tha subtrearury operat.ons have yleiued rather more "than tl.wsi.vow to ine bunks since Friday, and the bank state ment 01 Saturday If believed to have un aerstated the reserve Item at that time Dy several minion dollars, owing to- the fact .hat the heaviest movement last week came late, and so figured for less than it should havn in the weekly average. Some Importance Is attached, howe'ser, to the sumained upward movement lit sterling ex change in connection with the correeponi lng rise in london discounts, which made a greater advance today, it Is believed that unless money rates here arc allowed to advance again the demand from London will result in an outgo ot gold. 1'nls wouiu In ten ere with the plana ot the managers of the present speculative campaign In stocks, who have counted upon a period of eusy money. The (all tor a lo per cent In stallment of the $o,ooo, ooo subscription Uo the International Marine syndicate, which will call tor .,(', ""0 on Saturday, Is an other factor in the situation. Recent In creases In bank and trust company stock will call for some 4H.0w.oco to take up new stock, and In the more remote future are the propoHed Pennsylvania stock issue and the presumption that the purchase for con trol of Reading will be followed by Hie issue of some new security Hgqthst thJ holdings. Rumors continue busy also with alleged plans for retiring the Atchison ie bentures lth a new bond lnue. Th qui -k multiplication ot these possible new offer ings in the stock market had a rather milling effect. Berlin also reported a new German loan as an early prospect '1 he numerous rumors of further railroad com binations which were circulated- failed to laivc a reviving effect upon speculation, either because of thio new solicitude or the effect on money supplies, or because the rumors showed some lack 01 inventive power. A combination 01 Atcnison ana kock Island, a Rock Island outlet to tide-v. iter by way of Erie, a ourchase of Chicago Great Western by Rock Island,, a purchase or A ten won by Pennsylvania ana an ao sorptlon of Southern Railway by Pennsyl vania were some of the rumors which were formulated during the day without pro ducing much effect. There wa some early strength In Atchison and Sugar, and later advances in specialties, including me cni- cago Union Traction stocks, the Iowa Cen tral stocks, the Rubber goods stocks, Kan sas City Southern and one or two others. which were unexplained by any special news. Speculative bonds were weak in sym pathy with stocks, but the Investment Is sues were firm. Total aales, par value, $2,- 710,000. United State bond were unchanged on the last call. Buyer started out In good sea son, and as most of the trains were In at reasonably early nour tne duik 01 me offerings was soon disposed of. The better crade ot beet steers were rather scarce this morning, and In fact there were no choice bunches on sale. Packers, though, took hold In good shape, and the maraet could safely be quoted steady. Buyers evidently had to have some cattle to nil ineir immediate oraers, so that In the absence ot good stuff the com moner grades were more easy to dispose of than usual. The cow market was fairly active ana Just about steady on all grades. Canner and the medium kinds seemed to be ln good demand, a well a the belter graae of cornfeds. A large propoitlon of the offerings consisted of cow stuff, bul the demand was BUtnclent to take everything offered at last week' prices. There was no particular change in uie market on bull, veal calve and stags. The sudd y of stockers ana leeaers was light again this morning, and a the de mand continued In good shape the market was aotlve and stronger on all desirable grade. There were everal bunches good enough to bring over 11. 00, and one big string sold at 84.35.
