CHTCAnO, Aug. ll.-Today m a dull no In both grain and provlelona asid every thing wont up. The government crop re t'ort, which was a disappointment to the bear, wna the cause of the upturn. Hhorts were frightened and covered freely In everything. Sellers were acarce In wh'at and In spite of good crop condition! the brisk demand to secure profits, especially In corn, aent wheat up 2c and corn ad vanced 2Sc At the clone September wheat Was itf l; up, September corn lHc higher and September oats 'aVc advanced. Pro visions cloaed unchanged to be higher. It waa a revival ot bull conndenc and fear on the part of the bears that put through a heavy business In the wheat pit. The general Impression prevailed that the end of the bear campaign had come yes terday, and. strangely enough, the low (rices of this campaign had come before the government report. Usually a govern ment report Is followed by depression. The case was different today. Whereas the estimate of a spring and winter wheat crop of about 7&0.000.000 bushels had gained cre dence the government suggested only 6i0, Ouo.OoQ bushels. Foreign markets gave the report a bullish Inspection and sent higher quotations, and the northwest had lighter receipts, Primary receipts were heavy, the weather was good and ordinary conditions were as bearish aa before the receipt of the report. Coarse gralna, however, also had an upturn, selling waa almost nothing and buying for the support of Beptember was mo vigorous that snorts bid prices up hur ' riedly. New York and St. Louis wrre In .the market heavily on the buying side and 'there was a. good commission house de mand all oay. Arrayed above the bull -movement were light seaboard clearances, although sixty boatloads were taken for export at seaboard points and 600,000 sold lor shipment here later worked against the lightly bearish Incentive and resulted In a much stronger upturn. There were several lapses from high prices on the advance, but the close w near top figures. Orad- ng shows but little Improvement, and the ocal contract stocks are fast disappearing. September opened M,tir. to H4fc higher at 6,tc to t7c, sold to 6HVe and closed very trong, lVl'c higher at 6c. Local re ceipts were A'.) cars. 9 of contract grade; Minneapolis and Ltuluth reported IK cars, making a total for the three points of 622 cars, against 719 last week and V7 a year go. Primary receipts were 1,273,000 bushels, compared with sfil.000 bushels last year. Seaboard clearances In wheat and flour cquaieu 823,000 bushels. Corn show! much strength, partly be cause the government report showed 1 per cnt reduction since July 1, but principally on heavy covering by a great manv shorts who secured hanisome profits. Most of ths purines waa In September. The market 'was Influenced by frosts, very small re oe pts and the etrergth In wheat. Cables were lower, due to liberal American, offer Ipga and at times had Influence enough, to goiher with good con newt, to cause slight breaks In the advene. Commission houses bought liberally. In the main, however, coin traders Ignored figure, cables and the generally good weather and bulled the ' cereal on aenf'ment. Tha trade was full of atp-losa order, which came out freely frcm those pressed on the short side. Con servative traders salt? conditions for the ctops could not M Tjetter. September sold as low as b0tc and lumped to 62vsc closing strong, lc up at 624c. Receipts wera only 82 cars. There wss no Influential biivtng In oats, but prices responded quickly to the bullish ent'ment In the other pits. Provision houses bought fairly and prominent bulls were taking May. Tiro lower basis of prices, however, had the effect of stimulating an active demAnd and a good business was trans acted In electrolytic, amounting to 1,000.000 pounds altogether at $H.624 for August and September delivery. At the close of the market the tone still ruled weak and offerings were freely made on tha quoted basis. Eng lish prices also suffered declines, spot and futures both easing off 8s 9d and closing at 52, 2s d for spot and 52, a 3d for futures. Liberal offerings of tin In the local market, coupled with an absence of demand from speculators or consumers, broke prices today about ' 30 points on spot, the market closing weak at the de cline. Spot closed at $2S.2W28.50. The Lon don market reported a drop of 16s for the clay, presumably due to the same cause. Spot cloyed at 12 10s and futures at 124 6s. In lead there was little change noted and prices remained as last quoted. Spot closed at $4,124, London was un changed at 11 2s 6d. Spelter ruled firm on moderate demand and absence of offer Ings. Display: of Straagrt) Early, feat Close 1 Lower. NEW TORK, Aug. 12. The domlnatlng feature in the stock market continue to be the coming crop and the money out look. Crop new was eminently satisfac tory today, both that of the report of the Agricultural department and the later cur rent new of the Weather bureau, but it la to be borne in mind that the speculation for some time past ha been diligently dis counting good crops, which have been clearly foreshadowed. On th other hand, the autumn aotlvlty In the money market, while it ha been expected and made the subject of Indus trious warnings, iiaa imiu iH.urS, !a spec u!atlon. This week's rise In money rates therefore would naturally be of moat effect on speculative conditions. Buyers In an ticipation of good crops, seeing the dan ger of a flurry In the money market which force liquidation of stocks and attracted by the high lever to which price have at tained, are tempted to sell to realise their profit. There waa considerable strength at one time today and In a few case it continued to the close, but for the moat part the early rise in price waa taken advantage of to realise prortts and the general level of price ended lower than last night. There was a further contraction also in the volume of the dealings, which dropped back again below half a million shares. Estimates of crops Indicate a wheat harvest of over 162,000,000 bushels. The corn crop In today's government report indicates as the highest of the country. This had Its effect amongst the southwest em grangers, especially amongst the Gould group. Another striking show of strength waa made by Baltimore & Ohio. Amongst the return of the railroad gross earnings for JJlS flr,t WMk, of August Chesapeake A Ohio shows a decrease of $103,553, compared with last year, and Missouri Pacifie s earn ings for the same period declined $28,000. The two groups of railroad In which the trongest stocks are were thus handi capped by this unfavorable Influence. The part fat kinds did not sell any too freely and were no more than steady. The cow market wa active and stronger on anything that had any kill to Jt. The proportion of cow stuff to the total re ceipts waa not large, so that buyera took hold with considerable life and a good many of the more desirable bunches sold a utile nigner. canner and medium grade sold about steady. . . Bulls, veal calves and stag did not show enough change from yesterday to be worthy of mention. The demand for atockera and feeder continued very active and the good kinds may safely be quoted steady to strong. The same as has been the case, though, right along, the common grades did not sell very freely and were only about steady. , Western range cattle, of course, made up the bulk of the offerings, but the quality was far from being choice. The better grades of beef steers sold readily at steady to strong prices, but the common kinds were rather neglected and were only teady. The cow market was In about the aame condition as steers, but If anything the good cows sold to better advantage, as compared with yesterday, than the steers. For the two day this week there is a big increase in supplies both over the same nays of last week and also over the corresponding days of laat year. Owing to the liberal receipts buyers had an opportunity to pick out the good stuff and discriminate against the commoner grades. They started in and bought up the good to choice grade In good season at steady to strong price, but by good grade Is meant the handy weights aa well a those showing quality. The heavy sheep and lamb do not sell to as good advantage a the handy and lightweight stuff. The heavy sheep and the commoner grades of all welshte were rather slow and weak There wa a good deal of common tuff or. sale today, which naturally mad th market seem rather dull. Feeders were In more liberal receipt this rrorwlng than for om time, past, but good stuff sold at steady prloea. Common kinds were more or lea neglected the same as usual.
