A consecrated church Is set apart for religious purposes for all time and can never be alienated from the church, while a church that has been simply dedicated may be sold or otherwise disposed of. For this reason in new countries where condi tions are changing and the population is shifting from one part of a city to another a church is seldom consecrated. Another reason for failure to consecrate churches Is that under the rubrics of the church the building and the altar must be permanent, the latter of stone and the church Itself of etone or brick, while any temporary structure may be dedicated. There nre probably not more than fifty consecrated cburches in the United States, while every church has been dedicated, as it is unlawful for a priest to say mass in a church which has not been blessed. The rite of dedication bears the same relation to the rite cf consecration as the effect of one bears to the other. In conse cration none but a bishop may act. while in dedication a bishop may designate some priest to act for him. In the former the church must be bare of all temporary fix A BLESSING.
