10 THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : THURSDAY , SEPTEMBER 7 , 1899. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL U3tr ngth of Ontalde Markets Brings Chicago Wheat Up Several Fractions , EVERYTHING ON 'CHANGE ' CLOSES HIGHER < Cnntlnucil IlnylnK of. . Soplpmber bj- Elevator Projilc n Penlnro Corn Up for September , Lower Future * . CHICAGO , S pt 6.-Wheat was Influenced by thc strength of outside markets and by the Improvement In the export de mand. It ruled strong all day and closed &fl * c higher. A feature was the continued buying of September by elevator people. Corn closed Uc higher for September , but n. Rhode lower for December. Oats closed V fV M-Thor : ird provisions BS'i'.ic higher for October products. Wheat opened unchanged for December nnd a llttlo lower for September , the latter on account of the heavy receipts In the northwest. Llttlo whtiit was offered for nalo and shortly after the opening thc change In the aspect of outsldo markets which hnvo been relatively weaKcr than Chicago for some time past , but wijlch to day were comparatively stroiiKcr , Induced Bomo covering by the more timid shorts nnd a good advance In prices took place. December opened nt 71fi71Hc , while Sep'cm- lior opened He lower at C5e , advanced to 70 > lc. Thc advance was sufllclent to Induce realizing , which carried prices back frac tionally , but after a long period of com parative dullness , during which Dei-ember hung around 71'ft71ijc , the continued strength of the northwest and other out- Eldo markets and thc Improvement In the export demand , Increased the volume of trading In the speculative market nnd ngaln advanced prices , Thn strength shown l > y September was especially noticeable' . There wan a good demnnd for this from elevator people nnd shorts , and the spread between September and December nar rowed to IWc. The strength was In splto of the liberal country movement and free offerings. Minneapolis and Duluth received 740 carp , against 373 cars last week nnd 730 a year ago. Chicago receipts were 203 cars , 59 of contract grade. Total primary re ceipts were 958,000 bu. , compared with 1,301.000 bu. a year ago. Atlantic port clearances of wheat and flour aggregated 410,000 bu. New York reported unvwhcro from 60 to 72 boatloads worked for export , and Duluth reported 300,000 bu. of that amount worked from there. BradBtrc-H's reported nn Increase In the worU'3 visible of 2,521,000 bu. This was unexpected , but had little effect. Buying by shorts was quite heavy during the late trading and the best prices of the day were -cached shortly before the close. December advanced to 71 ic and closed at 71lX > Tf719ic. ' 'fptember Bold nt 70V40'ic ' ! and closed at 7J' c. Corn , was llrm for September and about Btcady for deferred futures. Iiep ms of ncrlous damage by hot dry weather wore received and lake rates were reduced about \lc helping the corn shipper that much. A premium over September was bid for c-aiih , but It was difficult to get. Reports of rain In Illinois nnd a general desire to icallzo caused an easier feeling during the latter part of thc session. Receipts were 911 cars. J > ccembcr ranged from 2Sc to ? iVic , and closed > ic higher at 31T&C. A fair general trade was d"ne In oats. Prices In thn muln wera influenced by the nctlon of wheat and corn 'ind ruled a llttlo higher throughout. Exp.Tis were good , buyers with September In the most demand. [ Receipts were 310 cars. The shipping de mand was good. Derooiber ranged from S0iff2014c- 20V * and Io3 l , ,0 higher at COV4c. September closed HS'/to higher at . HOSTON , Sept. 6.-The Americaji Wool and Cotton Reporter will eay tomorrow : The trade ns a whole represents a rmlct market , but a few houses have consum mated some good-sized deals and ar > a re sult the total gales of the week aggregate a large total , one house alone dlspoxng : of about 2,000,000 pounds of wool , comprising l.SOO.OOO pounds of Montana. Most nouses report a small business , but there la no diminution In the ttrength previously shown and wools continue to be stiffly held generally at ton figures. Manufacturers , It appears , have fapn testing the market for all It is worth and are doubtless satisfied that they have had a strong market to butt against. All cheap wools are practically eliminated and old mothy wools have been pretty well cleaned up nnd gone Into con sumption , so that the markets present a clean slock at a price which Is low today compared with tlmt of other countries , par ticularly on tine wools. There has been conKldernble looking around on the part , of manufacturers and lots1 of sample bags have been taken , which It Is expected will lead to a good business In a week or two. Man ufacturers are buying only such wools as they need , however , and llttlo speculative tendency ! s noticed In the market. Sales for the week In Boston , < U90,5X ( ) pounds do mestic nnd 450orin pounds foreign , making a _ total of 6.640.600 pounds , against a total of 3.9u5,000 poundn for the previous week and a total of 1.S05.SOO pounds' for the cor I responding week last year. Slid Ksiiurleiicn of Jonathan Pe U- Ki-civ nnil Illn AVhlHkcrn. When Jonathan Pcttlgrew of Burr Oak , Knn. . returns to his wife and children It Is n question whether they will recognize him as the paterfamilias. Ho left his homo a couple nf days ago and reached Chicago late yesterday afternoon , relates the Chronicle of that city. He Is sorry he ever came hero to sell stock and seek enjoyment. Besides the cattle ho chaperoned to the stock yards ho brought along a moat luxuriant growth of the hirsute appendages , dropping down from ciich chin gracefully and with so much artistic design that Lorado Taft. had he seen him , might have been tempted to hire him as a model of the typical farmer. No longer has Jonathan that extraordinary growth of beard. And nn electric fan was the cause of It all , Naturally , like all other strangers In a big city that ralso corn and potatoes nnd things when they are at homo and see the Inside of a metropolis lllco Chicago once In a lifetime , Mr. PeHlerow , after lie had soM his cattle and stuffed his pockets with bank rolls , wandered aimlessly down Into State street. Ho had been told of Chicago's In teresting "loveo" and ho waa prepared for thugs , confidence men and others. Dis tressing to account , poor Jonathan's reading nnd precautions bad not prepared him for cleoulc fans. Mr , Pettlgrow struck a saloon a llttlo south c f Cougrc&s street. Ho had frequently drunk beer In Burr Oak and bo promptly ordered a 5-cunt lunch cf tiip Chicago brand. Ilo heard a "z-r-r" at the other end of the bar. Being of a cur ion a frame of mind , ho went to Investigate. Ho got too near. The brfze , like a magnet , attracted the beard. The beard , like a child near a rattle , was willing enough to cinilnte with the wind mill , A commotion followed. The beard and the fan became Jumbled together , the farmer unnllllngly began to do a buck step , the fan kept revolving , customers crowded around yes , there was plenty of excitement. The bartender , thoughtful man , rushed to the rescue. Ho grubbed the fan and the farmer backed away. Then Jonathan looked in the mirror. He was not hlmaelf. He had lost big most cherished article his whiskers , OMAHA LIVE STOCK MARKET Trade in Cattle is Without Any Now Fea tures of Importance.
