Stolen Island , reports the Now York TlnvB ,
10 can lay the * > lame on the crow of the
> ark Samarkandhlcli tnndo this port from
lava. The Samarkand is a tramp freighter
which runs mostly to the Malay archipelago
'or sugar nnd most cnythlng else she can
pick up tn the way of a cargo.
She picked up mostly Hying fish on tht *
cruise , and she didn't get these aboard from
ntiy pierhead or lighter , either , but took
hem aboard unlntcntlonnlllko while ( lap
ping around la the doldrums about 18 dc-
rccs south latitude , off the Guinea coast.
The crew of the Samarkand ate Hying fish
until fishbones fairly stuck out of their cars ,
and when they got to South Brooklyn they
lumped several barrelfuls of living ones into
.ho bay , claiming that they ncro ashamed
a look a flying fish In the face.
Likewise , they 'brought along a fish story
hat would make a fresh water fisherman's
diary look like a leaf from the gospel.
3very man of the crew of the Samarkand
. -ouches for the story , likewise the only pnn-
scnger , n Yankee chap named Cody , a tooth
Ixcr , who linn been furbishing up the grind
ers of the Boers from Pretoria to the Cape.
The story runs something like this : The
Samarkand , which during the last two years
ins kept her Scottish crew many leagues
Irom their native heather , back of Loch
Pyne , put out from Java with half a cargo of
jrown sugar. Everything pulled taut and
mouotonousllke for a month , until the
'cracker hash , " "salt horse" and "soup and
bully" began to go down hard like , nod the
galley got to be as lonesome as an ancient
Lomb.
One dny early In Juno the bark was nosing
about In the South sea doldrums feeling for
a working breeze , with everything n-flnp-
plng up aloft. It was elx bells nnd the
tropical sun was just marking a lane of
phantom silver leading over to the western
liorlzon , The crow was at supper nnd the
bo'swaln's mote was at the helm a-hanglng
onto the wheel lazyllke , when suddenly off
the starboard quarter there was n whir In
the water and then a whir In the air as If a
flock of albatrosses \\ero making for the
ship.

The bo'swaln's mate took one look in that
quarter , then blew his whistle nn'd dodged
behind the binnacle after getting two ter
rific nelts on the side of the head. The crew
tumbled down again. Old John Spcnce , the
carpenter , took in the situation at a glance.
"Fish ! " said he. "Tarnation , lighters full
of 'em , " and rushed below for barrels.
The school of filers had been attacked on
one side by a school of bonltos , while a
school of alblcoro had executed a flank
movement on the lee sldo and the whole
school of filers took to the air.
The flying fish formed a considerable cloud
about six cable lengths wide and extending
along the line of the sun as far as the cyo
could reach , shutting out the light. The
bark lay right In the way and flab struck
her like a shower of hailstones and fell
senseless to the deck.
The epars , shrouds , stays , weather bra&cs
and hatch combings were loon slippery and
shone like silver with the fish scales a-stlck-
ing to them , while the rigging was slushed
nnd the deck fairly ran with floundering
flah. The crew just shoveled them into bar
rels of salt water until everything on board
that would hold water was filled , , then an
extra watcb was set to shoveling fish over
board and cleaning a patch from the cabin
hatch.
The flsh storm lar.ted for a half hour and
the striking of the fish against the sheets put
the bark along three knots on her course , or
the crew of the Samarkand hope to bo keel
hauled. 'After the flsh storm died out the
dead ones wore cleaned and salted away and
the live ones covered with aalt water and
placed along under the shadow of the bul
warks for future reference. After this the
crew had flsh fried , broiled , celled , baked
and smothered.
On entering Delaware breakwater Captain
Pe tor a ordered what flth were loft to bo
thrown overboard , hut several barrelfuls
were saved for emergency and some of these
wore tumbled Into the bay when the bark
arrived at South 'Brooklyn. Cody , the pas
senger , denies that when the fleh began com
ing aboard he ran aloft and called all hands
to iscrapo the keel ,
