OMA1TA 10 , 1HOI > . BECOMING A BUSINESS NOW Eipoiitlons that Are Projected for the Near Fnture , GOVERNMENT AND STATE AID IS ASKED Drrnlrr Amcrlrn Hie OnljImrgc I'n- lerprlsp In ( Inflnnr llnc tliut In to ! ! < On DuriiiK the 1'rciu'iit Ycnr. That the exposition business Is rapidly ticcomlnR a. fnd In this c-ountry Is Indicated liy the number of undertakings ot the sort < liat nro projected. The World's fnlr In augurated a now epoch and the luminous HUCCCSS of the TrnnsmlssUslppI Exposition Indicated that Chicago was not the only city that was equal to a tank ot such magni tude Now In every part of the United States exposition projects nro booming and no less than eight of them have already crystnllzcd Into definite form and promise. In the strife for exposition popularity the east and the west arc equally matched. Four of the piofcpcctlvo exhibitions are to bo lo cated In , eastern cities , while an equal nutn- licr are distinctively western enterprises. Of llio whole number two are scheduled for the current year , tbrco will bo held In 1901 , one In 1302 and two In 1903. During the coming Hummer the Greater 'America Exposition at Omaha will have a competitor In the National Exhibition ot American Manufactures and Products at Philadelphia. The conditions are such , how ever , that these enterprises are not ex pected to contlict seriously with each other nnd thrro Is no apparent rivalry llko that Mlilch Is already beginning lo manifest It- Bolf In bitter Jealousies between pome of the cities that have nsplrntlons further In the future. The avowed object of the Philadel phia exposition la to stimulate and cncour- ngo the export trade. The United States sen- nto hns passed a bill by which $330,000 Is appropriated to collect , Install and main tain u government exhibit and of this sum ? 50,000 has been set asldo as the 1'oundatlon for a propaganda ot a system ot national commercial education for the benefit of American manufacturers and merchants. Tlio Greater America Exposition will bo 3ield nt Omaha from July 1 to November 1. It has purchased the grounds and buildings of the TransmlsslBslppI Exposition , which cost nearly $2,000,000 , and has raised a largo fund by popular subscription to pay the In cidental expenses of the undertaking. It will 'hold ' out exceptional Inducements to exhibitors and Its dominant note will be the Illustration of the resources , products , man ufactures , architecture nnd racial charac teristics ot the Islands recently acquired by llio United States. It has asked for no ap propriation from congress , but ) e ready to pay all expenses connected with the trans portation nnd installment of the features If the government will merely give it the prestige ot a formal recognition. I3xinMltloii nt IIufTnlo. Ot the three American expositions pro jected for 1901 , one Is the I'anauierlcan Ex position to bo held on the Niagara near Buf falo. The ways and means committee of the ihousu of congress reported favorably upon a bill giving this exposition governmental recognition and providing for a United States government building and exhibit to cost $500,000. It is said that Governor Roosevelt of Now York favors a stnto appropriation of $500- 000 In snpport of the Panamorican Exposi tion. The people ot Buffalo have subscribed to the stock of this exposition $1,250,000 , there being nbout ! ) ,600 subscribers. Canada r.nd Mexico nnd some ot the Central Amer ican nnd South American states may par ticipate. Detroit Is projecting an ambitious enter prise for IflOl In competition with Buffalo. It is styled the Bicentennial , 200 years hav ing elapsed since the discovery of the site of Detroit. A commission has been organ ized nnd the officers of the Bicentennial Bpenk with great confidence as to the cer tain success of the cnterprlso. The other exposition of 1901 Is being promoted meted nt San Francisco and has for Its ob ject primarily exhibits which will tend to show the commercial Importance not only of the Pacific Islands recently acquired , hut of China , Japan and Corea. It Is styled the 1'aclflc Ocean nnd International Exposition. Other * .liny lie I'roji-cleil. So far there Is but ono exposition pro jected for 1902 nnd that Is the Ohio Con tounlnl and Northwest Territory Exposition , to bo held nt Toledo from May 1 to No vember 1 , 1902. This exposition , It Is snld , is designed for the education , edification nnd entertainment of the public , moro es pecially for the purposes of commemorating Important historical deeds performed In the early settlement of the state of Ohio , and nhowlng the great progress made by that Btnto along financial , Industrial , commercial nnd educational lines since the admission of the state Into the union. At this ex position other states nnd nations will bo Invltwl to participate nnd especinlly nil the ntntoB comprising the northwest territory. The Toledo Centennial Exposition will aslc the state of Ohio to appropriate $1,000,000. A largo fund has been raised by subscription nt Toledo. Host Important of nil Is the World's Fnlr nt St. Louis to cclobrnto the centenary of the Louisiana purchase. This enterprise is booked for 1903. Its promoters will nsU o the United Stntes congress n subsidy o $5,000,000 nnd they nro now at work on n subscription campaign , the purpose being to lal&u $5,000,000 by popular subscription , I Js the Intention to have every state carvei out of the Ixnilslana purchase participate The tltlo of this exposition Indicates Its In lornatlonnl scope nnd there Is said to be little doubt the project will bo dovelopei on n piano qulto equal to that of the Colum blan fair or the Paris exposition of 1900. The Now Orleans Exposition , concerning which little Is known , Is said to bo In tended nlso to commemorate the Louisiana purchase. There seems to bo n spirit of rivalry , If not Jealousy , between Now Orleans - leans and St. Louis nnd also between De troit nnd Buffalo , but there Is mi utter ab- HCCUCO of any such feeling upon the part of the projectors of the Omaha and Philadel phia expositions far IS119.
