The man who thinks he knows all about
the heart of a woman very often finds him
self sadly mistaken. The truth of thla Is
well Illustrated by a recent Incident In the
City of Mexico , relates the Courier-Journal.
A resident of that city paid attentions tea
a 'young woman , as has not Infrequently
happened before. It was also not very ( sur
prising , In view of the history of such affalra ,
that ho and bio Inamorata had frequent
quarrels. This lover , however , Introduced an
incident not so common In the cour.ie of
true love , even when It falls to run smooth ,
by plunging a knife Into the young woman's
back , Inflicting a wound which endangered
her life. Such , however , was her love for
the man that she concealed the matter from
the police. She not only recovered from her
wound , but she married the man who had
Inflicted It. This was certainly a courageous
act on the part of the girl , whatever maybe
bo thought of her discretion.
The new husband , however , saems to have
construed the former conduct of his wife
ai Indicating that she lacked the Instinct of
self-protectlcn and would bear an ) thing from
a man to whom she was devotedly attached.
Differences arose between the two after mar
riage , as they had before , arsJ the husband
fell Into the habit of adjusting them by the
use of a stick. We rcgrot to say that the
Information at our command does not glvo
the size of the stick with a view to determin
ing-whether It was within the prov'nco of
the old common law , which benevolently
permitted the husband to chastise Ills yvlfe ,
tut , net , a limitation upeci the dlmc-nslOM
of the club with which ho waa allowed to
remoMtrate with her. However this maybe
bo , the wife finally got tired of submitting
to the application of the club and inado
complaint against her husband. In this
complaint she Included not only the post
nuptial beatings , but also the ante-nuptial
wound with the knife. As proof of this eho
exhibited the scar of the old wound.
The sequel to this story la not yet com
plete. The husband pleaded that he had
beaten hla wlfo because she had beaten her
mother-in-law rnd caused her arrest upon
that ground. At last advices both were In
prison , but the moral of the story Is suf
ficiently evident. A woman will sometimes
bear more for the purpose of getting a
wothicks husband than she will to keep him
after she ha * found him out.
Detroit Journal : Of course they tarried
av,1ille In Prance , beautiful Franco ; and
there they visited a gaol.
A gael Is much the same as a jail , but
that Is another story.
"Who , " they asked , "Is that prisoner with
the tall , -white forehead ? "
"That , " replied the guard , "Is one who
has been convicted of treason. "
"And these others ? "
"Theso are those who know him to be In
nocent. "
In the * corridor. Just beyond , was a bronze
statue of justice , with a brass beefsteak
bquni over each eye.
I'utlliil ? It Into PriM'llre.
Chicago Post ; "Do you remember , my
bay , " asked the old gentleman , "that when I
praised you for doing so well In mathe
matics you suggested that actions speak louder
than words , thereby Intimating that you
would like to have me express my feelings ID
uornn more substantial way ? "
The boy nodded.
"I have not forgotten that , " continued the
old gentleman. "There Is a good deal that
U worthy of consideration In that saying ,
air ) today , although you have displeased mo
greatly , I shall not lecture you at all. "
So zaylag , be led the way to the woodshed.
