"It you would Just get over your foolish
prldo about carrying bundles It would save
us a Rood deal that wo now spend for ox-
liressage , " cald Mrs. Tainpklns to her hus
band at the brcaUfast lablo ono Saturday
morning. "I'm sure Uiat I sco other men
carrying bundles lots of them. And hero
jou go right hy the markets and It wouldn't
bo any trouble at all for you to run In and
get some things. Mr. Jones and .Mr , Smyth
and others do It and It would save us ever
so much , "
Tompldns , who Is a suburbanite , hau'cncd
to bo In n saving mood that morning , re
lates the Detroit Krco Press , and ho sur
prised his wlfo by saying :
"I don't know but you'ro right , my dean
and I'll try It. As you say , I cotno eight
by the markets on my wny to the train ,
and wo'vo simply got to cut down our ex
penses In some direction. Make out a list
of tho. things you want today and I'll bring
them homo with me. "
It was a good dail beyond his usual tlmo
when Tbmpklns came homo that evening.
Ills wlfo had been wedded to him long
enough to k'now that her llego lord was , to
put It mildly , mad , before ho opened his
mouth , but she satd cheerily :
"You're late , my dear. "
"Late ! " ho burst forth. "It's a wonder to
inn that I ever got 'jomo at all ! "
"Why ? "
" 'Why ! ' mlmlcke.1 Tompklns , "you over
give mo fltiothei1 marketing list and you'll
find out why ! "
"I guess I'm apt to find out , anyhow. "
"I guces so , too , for why under heaven
couldn't you gel cranberries out here ? I
doubt If I've got a dozen left of the Iwo
quarls I was Tool enough to buy , for the
bag they \vero in burst and they dribbled
out all the way to the train and "
"Why , Will Tompklns ! "
"Yes , and tfio Iwo dozen lemons I was
fool enough to buy Just because you had
them on thn list , broku loosa from the bag
they were m and rolled out Just when I
was In the mlddlo of a street crossing and I
didn't care to pick thorn no for fear I'd be
crushed by the crowd and the teams , and
I didn't get but two of them and they're all
over mud and "
"Why , W11V Tompklns ! "
"And If you ever wheedle -me Into buying
another roast of beef and lugging it homo
in my arms you'll know it ! It was raining
llko fury when I came out of the market
with that beef nnd the paper around It
got wet and peeled off and then I was streak
ing through the slrects with nine pounds of
uncovered , bloody , raw beef under my arms.
Got my hands all over blood until I looked
Itko an escaped murderer ! I'd of flung the
blamed beef Into the street If It hadn't cost
so much , and "
"I'm sorry , dear , and "
"You'll be sorrier If you ever ask me to
lug home a dozen eggs again ! I put them
Into my overcoat pocket and somebody
Jammed tip against me and there they are
In one big , nasty , cold omelet In my pocket ,
and "
"O , Will ! "
"You'll say 'O , Will' when you look Into
the other overcoat pocket , for I put Into It
that blamed bottle of pickled gherkins you
wanted and I slipped on the shiny pave
ment and banked up agalnsl a lump-post
and smashed the bottle all to pieces and
then I had to go through the streets with
a lot of vinegar dribbling from my coat
pocket and all over my clothes , and I "
"It was too bad ! "
"And when I fell I flung the roast of
beef about ten feet Into the air , and It hit
a woman In the bock and glanced off Into
the mud puddle , and she said I was no gen
tlcman , and threatened to have me arrested ,
and right In the middle of It a man came up
with six links of sausage dangling from the
end of his cano and said , with a fiendish
grin : 'You dropped them , sir. ' I'd have
denied It , but he Ip.ld them across my arm
and went off giggling llko a fool , and I "
"Oh , excuse me , Will , , but I can't help
laughing. "
"I'll bet , hy George , that you don't get
a chance to laugh at mo again soon for the
same cau oi I've done my last marketing.
You say 'iridrket' to mo again , and I'll take
the first traln , for Oklahoma , where I can
get a divorce for less than this cussed mar
keting bout lias cost mo ! I'll bo ready for
supper when I get some of the mud and blood
end cgs and vinegar off of me ! Ketch me
going to market again ! "
A THRIFTY I'MJIXX. '
KIMTKJnnil KiitfrprlNr of an Okla
homa .School < ; li'l.
In 1S92 the "Scgcr" school was built In
Oklahoma torrllory , among a colony of Clioy-
cnnes and Arapahoes , considered among the
wildest , most backward and mon-progrcfeslvo
of all Indians. Fortunately the superintend
ent of the new school , Mrs , John Segor , had
already gained their confidence In another
capaclly , so that when they were asked lo
put their children in school they uald that
they would , JIB soon as they were weaned ,
And they carried thlrf out literally.
Many Incidents are told Illustrating the
splendid work which has already been accom
plished directly and Indirectly by the school ,
for often the Influence in the community Is
equal to the actual amount of education
within the school walls.
Ono of the girl pupils , who entered the
school whc-n it was opened , has had nulto a
remarkable record. Having no previous edu
cation and leaving her really tivago homo
for the first time , she has demonstrated
what education Is doing and will do for the
red mso. There Is a system In nearly all
the government Indian schools by which
those pupils who are both Industrious and
frugal may earn money In the sowing room ,
o.i the farm or In some ono of the Behoofs
other Industrial departments. Of course thU
must bo outside of their regular work. This
young girl , after taking a regular course- an
a scholar , was Judged capable of filling a
salaried position. In the course of a short
tlmo eho filled not one , but several , and
worked In the sowing room besides. Out
of her tavlngs she bought a wagon , harnrc ,
team , orgen , bedroom set and a getting jr.a-
chine , all In view of her prospective mar
riage fo a young Indian to whom ube V.CLI
'ngaged ' , and when they were married nho
took enough savings ulth her to build a
nest borne ! All thin was accomplished In
: hreo years' time.
