Decline mi Yellow
Fever Scare. ,
CHICAGO , Hept. 14. Wheat averaged hUntr
today nnd closed nt Vic ndvnnce for the Decem-
IHT fuluie. 1/jcal feeling wns Iwnrlsh , but there
wns enough encouragement to buyers In the
way of bullish foreign news lo keep the mar
ket n little ntmvc yesterday's prices. Other
markets were dull and Inclined to weakness ,
j > rovlfdons having another touch of the yellow
fever scare. Corn nnd oals closed n shade lower ,
while provisions showed 7m/loc declines nt the
close.
In wheat , prices around the opening werb
controlled entirely by the action of the Liver-
jiuol muikot. That market started nt a > iJ de
cline , but Iwfore the opening here had not only
recovered this , but ndded % d b > yesterday's clos
ing price. Tlio reason given for Liverpool's
ntrcngth was a report of dmnago to the Argon
line crop by frost. That wns considered un
likely , find another private message from Liver
jwol said the report wus without foundation.
The market here , however , took sulllclcnt no-
tlco of thn report to open iWcmber wheat nt
from DSJio to 'J2c , the closing prlco yester
day having been 92WJ2HC. The advance en-
cnuraged sellers , nnd n quick reaction to 9140
followed. It wns stated on thu floor that a
mieclul session of the Rrltlsh IMtllament was
being talked of to consider means of relief for
the sufferers on account of the Irish I itato
crop failure. The bringing of this fealur * of
the world's food situation before trailers un
doubtedly was Influential In the advance to
3c , which followed the decllno to 914c. One
decidedly weakening factor wan the continued
lieavy local ntul northwest receipts. Chicago re-

Trade In coin wns dull , nnd the small amount
of business made a ralher heavy market. The
etuit was strong In sympathy with the opening
Jump of wheat. It followed that market on Its
decline , and for the remainder of the i-esslon
ruled very qulut and fluctuated within a narrow-
range Cables were unchanged to Ud higher.
Elevator people reported freer country accept-

reported poor. December ranged between 30sic

the advance of Its rates by the Hunk ot Eng

rate of Interest theru. The August excess of
merchnndlBo and speelo exports oler Imports
was not far fiom 522,000,000 and the September
export will evidently ! * larger , unless shipments
of gold are considerable. Merchandise cxporls
from New Yolk in ttircc weeks of beptemoer
have been 15.3 per cent over last year's and Im
ports 17.7 per cent less , and like changes In the
whole trade for the month would result In net
exports of 531.1 > 00OUJ meichnndlse , liosldes silver.
Product ) markets have been uncertain , closing
a fraction higher for both wheat and corn , while
the decline In cotton continues. With Si cents
paid for spot nt the end of August , colton has
dtopped 11 ? cents , or 18 per cent , in less than
four weeks. In spllo of n remaiknble revival of
manufactures. Fever In some southern cities has
not been largely Inlliientlul nnd tin- main factor
has been u geneiul Impression that estimates
uru as misleading as they were when the yield
was the grente.il on record. The corn estimate
most credited by the trade Is only 1,730,000
bushels , but Is coupled with figures tending to
show a surplus from the last crop of 400.u , leO
bushels iiver ordinary consumption. Were this
quite believed the prlco would not be rising , al
though exports continue heavy. In thrcu weeks
9.9I7.M3 bushels , against G.IM.ISI last year.
Wheat bus gained a fraction for the week , while
Atlantic cxporls , flour Included , for three weeks
have been 12,42S,1S1 bushels , ngnlnsl 0,183.743 last
year. Western receipts ale exceeding last year's
and foreign estimates now ngree In making lha
probable requirement from tills country over 1'W ' ,
WO.WW bushels glealer thnn last > ear.
The otllclal ending of the western conl strike
adds many thousand men to the working force
In the mines nnd others In manufactures using
bituminous coal. The Anthracite strike lias sub-
slanllally ended nnd no exlcnMve labor dis
turbance Is threatened. The output of coke Is
now 123,000 tons , and the price Is also advanced.
Some branches of the Iron itnd slcel Induslry are
clearly no longer able to keep up with their
new orders. Others nre veiy fully employed for
some monln abend nnd with nil the demand Is
Increasing. Heavy buying has raised Ressemrr
pig Iron at Plltsburg to 510.W and grey forge
to 59.30 , with actual saleil o' ' 10,000 tons. South
crn pig In the Mahonmg Valley for 50.73 nt
RlrmlnKhnm. lllllels nre quoted at 516.23 nnd
522.1 has l > een refused for wire rods. The
structural work Is behind orders and tin plate
mills are hindered by failure to get sheet burs
delivered fust enough , plate ami sheet mills
find heavy demand everywhere , and bars nre In
treat demand for cars at the west , with vastly
Improved demand and a shade better prices ut
the east. Advance of Iron and steel products
from thu lowest point Is 8.2 per cent.
Wool tales at Uoston have uecreuted a quarter ,
but manufacturers are still able to rind prollU
In goo.li with wool at present prices. Reporter
sales of wool are more than double those of
the most prosperous years , but the rise In prices
renders the future more doubtful except for
manufacturers having heavy supplies laid In.
The collon mills are doing large business ,
although recent buying of goods has naturally
decreased after the recent rush.
Failures for the week have been 209 In the

NEW YORK , Sepl. 54. In the review of the

Speculation continue- be on n very largn
icnle , the we'k's proceedings being attended by
sensational Incidents. Ttiey embraced a sharp
lecllne with heavy bull liquidations , due to the
advance of the money market , followed by n
sliarp recovery of prices , encouraged by the
announcement Hint 5Z.M4.Wi ) gold was en rnme
from Europe. The market had notice that the
period of excessively rates was drawing to
nn ( ml and on Monday and Tuesday Inst lenders
marked up their call loans. There was no
scarcity of mmey. nevertheless the stock market
lad become overbought , and many speculators
were carrying unwarranted large nmoiuits of
locks. Hence the time was ripe for liquidation.
The bear Interest hammered the market vigor
ously. While the declines on nn nvcrnge were
no more thnn two points In the nclltc list , some
stocks made very considerable decllnei nnd the
market presented a bearish appearance on Tues
day.On
On Wednesday , however , the market became
steady , though dull. Liter announcements nf
gold being taken In London caused n sharp rnlly
In prices , which developed Into excited
Imll speculation. The market continued very
strong on Thursday. There was considerable
bullish manipulation by the cliques In various
specialties. On Krldny the market wns heavy

braced a harder tone In exchange nnd specula

lOiiPtlonnry Spirit In Knit Srvny on
Wnll Street.
NEW YORK , Sept. 24. The reactionary spirit
resumed full sway today In the stock market
after n brief period of higher price * during the
morning , due to sympathy with Sugar , which
advanced nt one time to 2 points over last
night's close. Sugar's strength was due to the
belief that the Treasury department would de
cide tliat Holland was In effect paying nn ex
port bounty on Sugar and that the counter
vailing duty would therefore apply to Dutch re
fined sugars. The rise In Sugnr nnd some
strength manifested by Manhattan served lo
raise the general level of pilc-es to n fractional
extent , but proved Inadqiiale to sustain them
nnd the fall for the lenulndcr of the day was
practically continuous , though more rapll at
Home times than others. There wus nothing In
the nevs of the day to account for the decline ,
nil the reports of railroad earnings continuing
to show large Increases and advices of the
growth of business aeltlvlty being uniformly
encouraging from nil points. The outside public ,
however , hud apparently censed lo buy , and the
large bull operators were no longer willing to
nccept the heavy offerings of stocks made to
them. Profit-taking was the order of the day.
The market was dull compared with the recent
tone , but the decline was nevertheless checked.
The beur Interest was well defined nnd was
constant in activity during the day. The situa
tion of the money msrket nttrncted Interest.
The fenlures were the firmness of call money on
n bnsls of 2 per cenl and conslJerablo activity
In the time money market. The exchange mar
ket also hardened , actual rates advancing about
'i In response to the gold shipments now on the
wny to this country. Remlltnnces to the Interior
have continued on a large scale nnd tomorrow's
bank statement Is expected to show R laige ad
