more with the proper assortment of mer

every Jobbing house In the city has about
all the buslnej-s that it can attend to lth
pttixnt force of employes.
It Is tne general expectation , however ,
that l.u ! nes will be ptlll b-tttr a little
later , when country buyer. begin to arrive
In the city In larger numbers , as they are
eure to do with the coming of September ,
tlreat preparations are now l > ing made by
the Jobbers to take care of the crowd of
liui-ers who are expected to arrive the first
week of next month In response to Invita
tions now being sent out.
Tne State fair comes rather tale this wa-
on for some burer- . and then , too. It wa :
felt that there would then be such a nun
that It would be Im ofslble to give each
vIMttnr buyer the personal attention that
the members of the trade in this city wouu
like. For that reason It was thought best
to try and Induce as many merchants as
iwwlble to visit the city earlier In the
month. In furtherance of that plan the fol
lowing Ic being sent out Into the country :

Eve'rv effort will be made to entertain
vMtlns merchants and Rive them a good
time la addition to showing them as com

LOCAL RETAIL SITUATION.
The local retail trade is not as- active ai
It mlsht be. or what the members of thi
trade would like to see , but It is wlthou :
doubt as good as could be expected thl-
earrv In the season. The Improvement li
the kentral business situation started In th <
country as a result of large crops and goo. ,
prices , and while the Jobbers felt the changi
at once. It was not to be expected that thi
city would Immediately experience the sami
change. From the nature of things anj
improvement that li to come to the retal
trade can only resu.t from a gradua

Business In the corn pit was on an Im

hands during the -Cession. The pit was
crowded all day with excited speculators
and price fluctuations were rapid and vie

at the opening and forced prices up 2Vtc
over yesterday's < losing. Holders of long
corn let go there , the selling beiniTprompfed

CATTLE There were seventy-nine cars
received , but twenty-six were direct to kill
ers , so that the supply on sale did not ex
ceed 1.100. Seme very good natives , and the
best western range heifers of the season
to date were Included. Lower and dull was
again quotable of the fat cattle trade , but
In other branches steady prices prevailed.
Buyers of fat cattle seemed to be on easy
street and uniformly bid lower prices on
about all grades of fat stock except , per
haps , a few handy little steers. Many
dealers called today's bids a quarter below
the week's high point and buyers did not
appear very anxious even at the decline ,
claiming that they were steadily losing
money and that we were srtill out of line
with other places. There was no snap in
the trade at any time , and at Its close there
were still good cattle in first hands. The
western offerings were mostly feeders and
sold to go back to the country.
Good cows and heifers firm with other ?
steady was the general report for this
branch of the cattle market today. Bulls
and -stags were also steady and veals firm ,
the market for all kinds of butchers' stock
closing up In good shape. Sales Included
western heifers at 33 o.
Stockcr and feeder speculators generally
try "to" cHeapen Up a little on Saturday tc
help. pay for- carrying their purchases over
Sunday , but there was only a moderate sup
ply offered , while the outside inquiry was
larger than usual for the last day of the
week. Desirable grades ruled steady will ;
common to medium kinds a shade easier ,
but all are higher for the week. Repre-
