The cranks , shafts , connect- ng rods and steerage gear will bo made of the finest Ingot steel. In order' to cqme up to the builders' contract with the owners , these engines will have to send the St. Louis through the water at the rate of at least twenty knots on hour , under ordinary seas and going conditions. The steerage apparatus will be of the screw gear type , with Williams steam and hand steering engine. The hull Is of mild steel , ot the best quality. The arrangement of bulkheads and water prouf compartments Is such as to.make it practically Impossible to sink ihe Vessel. If In collision the bulkheads are damaged Lhrco of the compartments might bs com pletely flooded and yet the vessel remain completely seaworthy. To Increase the safety ot this multitude the ship will carry fourteen Chambers collapsl bio lifeboats , fourteen ordinary lifeboats , one cutter , one gig and four metal boats , oil on the cabin deck. For the comfort of the pas sengers there has been supplied In the plans a superb saloon , 110 feet long by fifty fee wide , which Is to be exquisitely furnished Over the saloon rises a dome thirty feet lonu , by sixteen foot wide and twenty-five fee high amidships above the dining room deck The dining room tables will bo set fore ant aft.
