A private Liverpool dispatch salt Hussion supplies arc moderate and Intlmatei that the key to the situation was the exportable portable surplus of thli country. Paris wired that stocks were small and likely tc decrease and that the wheat and flour mar Icota were firm and advancing. In reviewing the butter situation Chicago Pro duce fays : Condltlr-ns which have been ex- teclcd for tome weeks past have prevailed Iho > nst six days. Production of butter Is gradually 'ailing off , nnd Iherc wilt bo a marked shortage n the supply for the coming week. There have iccn tuo snow storms In the west the past six lays , nnd feed Is celling short. Milk Is shrink- ng In every section on account of the cnm weather , and the result has been a steady ad vance In PI Ice of butter , amounting to Ic to Hie n the d'ffcrcnt markets. The most cheerful port of Ihc situation , how ever , IB to bo found In the condition of the mar- < ets. A conservative policy upon the part of sellers the past four weeks has kept nearly all grades of butter well sold out nt leading cen- crs. In Olcago , for Instance , there has been .1 reduction of 23 per cent In the supply of all grades In the butter cellars. The active demand 'or goods from outs'dc points Indicates a shall- age In other markets al > , RO that II may be said that the butter trade of the country ns a whole Is In excellent condition to begin the winter. There Is a very light supply of fine goods to je found nt any point. In fact , the b"st butter has been scarce for some time , and pi city gen erally cleaned up on arrival. It has been the undergrades that have alven the trouble. The past week lias witnessed the clean'ne Up of n ; xl many lots of undergrade * , particularly seconds ends , so ( hey are no longer a. drug ; on the mar ket. There are some thirds hanging lire , which would be cleaned up around lie If buyers could be found , but there Is some demand for such goods , and with light receipts In future they will not give their holders n great dual of con cern. The holders of storage butter are begin ning to figure nround again to unload their but ler , There have been some shipping orders In the market for these goodo. Holders , however , figure tint this Witter will be wanted the next few weeks , and are not showing as much con cern as they were a short time ago , when It looked as If winter would never come. There Is not much encouragement In tic : situation on low grades , however. There Is no outlet for ladle * at prices that will enable packers to pay any hinder price for packing stock , and the result Ic that there Is a comparatively low market on this grade , with no prospects of nn Immediate Im provement. The week opened on the Stock exchange with a rnther un settled feeling , owlnp to the uncertainty which seemed to prevail as to the govern ment bond Issue. H was expected by the street that the loan would be given to the public through the morning papers , nnd the fact that the Washington authorities are still silent on the matter created a feeling of disappointment which In some cases re sulted In realizing sales nnd selling for the short acccunt , with the result that n reac tion of from % to 1 per cent took plnco In the first quarter of un hour. This was followed by n slight recovery , but In the late dealings the market again eased oft and closed weak.
