Atclilsun Will Ho ( lprr.ltml from Clllcneo Ititti'ail of tlin Km I. CHICAGO , Sept. 27. Receiver Aldace P. Walker ot the Atchlson" system , arrived In Chicago today and' made his first official visit to the offices of the road , Ho de clined to say what ( he policy of the road will bo under Ills management , declaring ho had no time as yet to become acquainted with the system and Its workings , but that In his opinion things wotlld move along In the future as In the pant with the one dif ference that the road would bo managed by the receiver from thp general ofilces In this city and not controlled from the east , as heretofore . Chairman Caiawcll of the Western Pas senger association returned from the east today and signalized his return by promptly adjusting the rates between Chicago and Kansas City and Chicago and Council Bluffs. The rate of JG.75 which the associa tion roads has made between these points has been abolished. The lines In the as sociation expressed a willingness to with draw their rates If the Atchlson , which made the first reductions , would also with draw Its rote. This the Atchlson agreed to do If Hie other lines would make the tem porary reduced rate JI.23. which Is by agree ment to be In effect between St. Louis and Kansas City during the St. Louis fair. The passenger committee of the Central Traffic association was In session today en deavoring to arrange a basis of percentages by which all the business originating at or passlns through Chicago , St. Louis and Pcorla , destined to the western terminals of the trunk lines , might be divided among the various roads. Something of a sensation developed In the United States court today when the Northern Pacific re ceivers' petition for- authority to issue new certificates came on for a hearing , It trans pired that Instead iof wanting $2,090,000- the purposi of refunding the receivers' certifi cates falling due on October 1 , the receivers wanted to Issue new cartlflcJtes to tha amount of $5,000.000. nnd Instead of being an amicable arrangement , as the country had " bean led to suppose , there was bitter opposi tion to It on the part or Ilrayton Ives and his associates. An adjournment was asked for by Hie oppo sition , nnd Mr. Ivrs pledged himself to re deem the receivers' certificates falling due on Holiday and carry thorn until the petition was disposed of if tliu court would grant an adjournment. Judge Jenkins nude an order adjourning the case until 2 o'clock Sat urday , with the understanding that If by noon Saturday Mr. Ives has deposited the amount necessary to pay the certificates com ing due , $ i.l5t.9S5 : , the hearing may then bo adjourned to some evening of ne.\t week , to be heard in Chicago. The receivers propose to make the new certificates payable July 1 , 1837. Tlin Mod am Itimntr Thrives on good food nnd sunshine , with plenty of exercise In the open air. Since its opening pro duction In St. Louis It has been greatly Im proved in the elimination of some scenes , and the substitution therefor of others that have greatly strengthened It. The' pool room scene Is a new oneso Is the. last act , representing Adam Hagcnback's home. The dramatic action has been brought out more clearly through the medium of these scenes. The opening scene of the play , showing Gen eral Grant's old log cabin , Is one of the prettiest stage pictures ever presented. In the foreground Is the log cabin where Gen eral Grant lived In his earlier days , and In the background Is seen , the river Ies Peres which General Grant forded to save Jullf Dent's life. In the distance Is seen the lit tle old church , the historic landmark twelve miles outside of the city of St. Louis , where General Grant married Julia Dent. The whole scene partakes of the love ant patriotism clustered about the memories o : Grant's earlier life , Another great sccno Is Derby day. In the third act , showing the great St. Louis race- truck In the back ground , and as true to life as anything can be. In Hits Bcono are Introduced seven celebrated thoroughbreds headed by old Free land , "the grandest race horse In all the land. " "The Derby Winner" will appear at the Fifteenth Strot theater for four nights anil Wednesday mntlnee. commencing Sunday matinee , September 30 , Robert Downing , who has by the force o. his native genius and untiring energy ralsei himself to the front rank ot American trace dlans , will como to the Uoyd for an en gagement of one night and matinee. The play selected for the evening la "The Gladl ator" of Saunet , one of the finest In the language , anil one which gives Mr , Down Ing's magnificent presence and genius ful scope. The character of "Tho Gladiator" Is one that has been associated with the names ot Forest and McCullougu. glanta In the profession , beside whom Mr , Downing has demonstrated lils right to itand. Mr Downing is very fortunate In having as hi : leading lady Eugenie Blair , a radiantly beau tlful woman and an accomplished actress whose finished work Is a splendid toll ti Mr. Downlng's strength nnd earnestness. To the Editor of Th lee : Ileplylng to Ihe communication In 'ho Ilee of Wednesday morning and evening , egordlng the Klnlh vard delegation , I will ay that the writer thereof , In claiming that he mooting at Washington hnll wai secret r a select coterie , wilfully states nn un- ruth. I say wilfully , because the style of ho author discloses his Identity , and I enow that he received nn Invitation to the aid meeting. I am a member of the Tliurnton club and ilso a member of the Ninth Ward club , and nvlted several Thurston club members to aid pl.ico for the purpose of arranging a. teaceahle solution of what seemed a mis understanding. None ot them appealed ex cept Andy Wiggins. Ninety republicans voro present representing the different walks f life1. Twenty persons were suggested and line selected whose names should be pre- cnted at the regular caucus , with others , or election. Accordingly , at the meeting if the- regular caucus , at which there were > yen 200 republicans , the names mentioned n The lice as rcgul.ir delegates and cloven ithers were proposed In said caucus , and ho delegation selected as uppe.ira on their Icket. The statement that the regular delegation s ii conglomeration of Webster , Thurston and Crounso Is untrue , and for the complete refutation our delegation refers the ( ruth respecting the republicans of our Ninth ward o John M. Thurston. The petition ticket ivus chosen ns follows : AM n member of the Thurston club 1 was present on the evening that the arrangement was to be madeto select a ticket to bn voted at the caucus. Mr. Jarrott made a motion that n committee ot seven bo appointed by the chair to select delegates. AH there were but thirty-eight nentliers present I opposed the manner of select IIIR delegates and favored a regular nomination of a list and then gn Into the egulnr caucus and carrying the ticket. There were three speeches made In opposi tion to me , the makers of which have not resided In the ward four months , and who appeared to have the general direction of ; ho whole affair. They claimed that the gang would run ii the lower elements nnd laboring men and outvote us. I replied that the republican inrty hail pretended to be n friend of tha al.orlng men and u distinction now drawn of that kind would bo suicidal. Mr. Marrelt'a motion , however , was carried. I was re- Itiested to go on the petition delegation aa well as the committee to select the vaino. [ refused for the reason nbovo stated , but ) ffcrcl to go on a caucus delegation , and gen n and win , which we- could have easily done. The chair then appointed a select committee to select delegates to bo voted at the prin'arle.s , and the truth Is , not name was mentioned therefor save those selected by that select committee. Will any fair-minded republican icsltate to fay which was the fairest ex pression of the sentiments of the Ninth ward republicans ? Agalnat the personnel of the select delegation I have nothing to say. I am credibly Informed that Mr. An- dreason , one of the select delegates , has been a life long democrat ; but I do say that .vhen . republican victories are to be won .ho party not only needs wealth and social : > osltlon , but also unswerving loyalty and liard work. I admit I am a machine republican , but [ want that machine so constructed and ad- lusted that every republican , high or low , rich or poor , select or common , can take iart In Us honest and successful operation.
