to favorable c.roi ) reports , free offerings nnd
IOWIT oniclal cable * , ami overcame n tern-
pornry advance caused by encouraging pri

higher all nrotind.
Oponlng trades In wheat allowed % c loss
and the market sold down a fraction more ,
rallied from % e to % c. worked back from
> .c to % ? , rallied a little and closed easy.
The uneasiness at the start was due to the
various stale bulletins being more favorable
than expected. Early Liverpool cables were
dull and lower , and this added weakness to
the situation. Outside market * all opened
lower , and offerings from the start were
heavy , while the Inquiry was rather limited.
The demand picked up later and the top
prices of the day were scored on private
cables , which reported the German govern
ment as having Issued a report which made
the crop condition there unfavorable , nnd
the damage by frosts serious and prices ad
vancing. A reaction set In and prices were
not maintained when the official cables were
posted , which showed Ilerlln off from % c

Corn was generally firm all day. The
strength was chiefly on the theory that the
movement Is liable to fall off In the Im
mediate future , influenced by the prospective
advance In rates from Kansas and Nebraska
points , and also to the fear of damage by
drouth to the recently planted crop In parts
of Iowa and Nebraska. The bulletins also
Indicated some damage to corn by the late
freeze. The market opened with a frac
tional loss , but almost Immediately recovered
nnd sold up % e , fell off a little , advanced
lie und closed at the top ,
Oats were firmer at the start , advancing
from % e to % e on light offerings , later re
acting from He to % c on Increased offer
ings.
ings.Lower prices for live hogs caused a mod-
crate decline In provisions at the opening.
This WPS followed by n further decline In
sympathy with the weakness In wheat , fol
lowed by a partial reaction on the report
that the coal strike had been declared oft.
Attempted covering by those who had sold
early created strength later , the market
closing at the outside prices of the dny and
rather active. Compared with last July pork-

Vessel rates were steady at ll.o for wheat

Tho' Kvenlng Post says ! As a piece of
expert strategy , today's movement of the
stock market was Interesting In n rare de
gree. The significance of today's recovery
from the Investment standpoint Is not per
haps Brent ; Us most Important meaning Is
that outside Investors as n class nro quite
as reluctant now to sell their stocks ns they
were three weeks ago. Indeed , It mny bo
said that the lower prices go under the In
fluence of n raid , the less disposed outsiders
are to sell actual holdings.

Supplies of oil -kinds continue fairly
liberal , receipts for the past three days
showing nn Increase of COO cattle , 1,100
sheep nnd 3WO hogs over the first half of
last week ,
The run of cattle was not very heavy , but
following Tuesday's liberal supply and In
the face of a heavy run and a lower market
at Chicago , 3,100 cattle were too many , nnd
prices ruled lower , with a slow , dull trado.
All classes of buyers were In the market ,
but all wanted the cattle lower , and started
In bidding lower prices from the first. The
general average of prices bid and paid was
about a dime lower than Tuesday. Some
of the nice , tidy , fat steers that nro always
In good demand , did not sell a great deal
off , while on the other hand , 10e would
hardly cover the decline on some of the less
desirable heavy cattle. In fuel , there were
a few coarse half fat cattle here that could
hardly bo moved nt any price. There wan
a very weak tone to the trade , and business
dragged along through the greater part of
the day , ft few common cattle being still
unsold at the close.
There was nothing new In the market for
cows and mixed stock. Offerings were di'-
cldedly limited , nml with n good general
demand they changed hands readily at fully
steady prices all around. A good many
calves were offered and sold at steady to a
shade easier prices. In rough stock , prices
showed no quotable change.
The trading In stockers and feeders was
mostly confined to yard traders , and was
very slow at that. Dry weather Is paralyz
ing this branch of the trade , us It decreases
the country demand , and at the same time
Increases the supply. There were lots of
stale cattle In the yards , and the fresh re
ceipts Included a good many very decent
westerns coming from ns far west nsash -
Ington and Oregon. There sold at from * 3
to $3.50. A week ago the same cattle would
have sold readily at from ? 3.-5 to $3.80.
The demand Is nt present poor , the supply
large , nnd prices fully n quarter lower than
last week. Representative sales :

HOGS Uecolpts today did not differ ma
terially from Tuesday's run , cither In quan
tity or quality. With nearly .3,000 hogs In
the three days , lower prices were almost In
evitable , and the 5o to lOc decline today did
not take salesmen by surprise. A heavy
run and a lower market In Chicago gave
buyers their cue , and they started In pound
ing hard. Local packers led the proces
sion , but a vigorous shipping demand made
business lively , and nearly a third of the
offerings were sorted up nnd reshlpped east.
The tip top paid was ? 1.GO , nnd several of
the common mixed loads early wnnt at
$ M5. For fair to good hogs of all weights ,
the market was $4.50 to $4.55. Huylng was
free , and local buyers , who wore the most
bearish early , had , ; ! > /.hustle to .flH their
orders late , the resuli uelng a strong , active
close , with $1.55 a very popular figure. The
pens wore cleared .earft' , the hogs selling
largely at $1.50 to fl.GS ; as against $4.515 to
$ ICO Tuesday , and $4".7S one week ago today.
