Henctlons , duo mainly to realizations of jirolits , took place at Inter vals , and there was an occasional bear rtrlvo which sent prices down temporarily , but there were buyers for all the stock * uttered , and after each rfecllno came a rally which established a higher range of values. Kxcoptlons to this rule were found In Borne of the specialties , which moved erratically nnd In a few cases recorded declines on the Uay. London was a purchaser In round amounts of the arbitrage stocks , chlelly of St. Paul , Louisville & Nashville. Union Pa- cine und AtcM-on. Chicago was also a heavy buyer of St. Paul , supposedly for the account of prominent railway men In that city , who anticipate good result from the meeting of railway managers to bo held In that city tomorrow. The general market was helped upward by the expectation of a settlement of tha rate question for some tlmo to come by this conference , and the bulls used the meeting for all there was In It. and perhaps more. hugar was again taken In hand by the clique and moved upward on reports from Wash ington that the senate would shortly P.IBS the tariff hill with the clause protecting the refilling Interests , ami that the house would accept the senate amendment- . Rumors that the coal strike was approaching a set tlement affected the shares of the anthracite roads favorably , Chicago Qas was bought by outsiders on the belief that there would bo no further efforts to Interfere with the payments of dividends. Cordage was stronger on reports to the effect that arrangements had been affected with manufacturers out. IUe of the trust to maintain prices. All tb Influences aflectlug the market were read In a favorable light by lh < ) traders , nnil hutico the trend of price * was upward. As a piece of expert strategy , today's movement of the stock market was Interesting In n rare de gree. The significance of today's recovery from the Investment standpoint Is not per haps Brent ; Us most Important meaning Is that outside Investors as n class nro quite as reluctant now to sell their stocks ns they were three weeks ago. Supplies of oil -kinds continue fairly liberal , receipts for the past three days showing nn Increase of COO cattle , 1,100 sheep nnd 3WO hogs over the first half of last week , The run of cattle was not very heavy , but following Tuesday's liberal supply and In the face of a heavy run and a lower market at Chicago , 3,100 cattle were too many , nnd prices ruled lower , with a slow , dull trado. All classes of buyers were In the market , but all wanted the cattle lower , and started In bidding lower prices from the first. The general average of prices bid and paid was about a dime lower than Tuesday. Some of the nice , tidy , fat steers that nro always In good demand , did not sell a great deal off , while on the other hand , 10e would hardly cover the decline on some of the less desirable heavy cattle. In fuel , there were a few coarse half fat cattle here that could hardly bo moved nt any price. There wan a very weak tone to the trade , and business dragged along through the greater part of the day , ft few common cattle being still unsold at the close. There was nothing new In the market for cows and mixed stock. Offerings were di'- cldedly limited , nml with n good general demand they changed hands readily at fully steady prices all around. A good many calves were offered and sold at steady to a shade easier prices. In rough stock , prices showed no quotable change. The trading In stockers and feeders was mostly confined to yard traders , and was very slow at that. Dry weather Is paralyz ing this branch of the trade , us It decreases the country demand , and at the same time Increases the supply. There were lots of stale cattle In the yards , and the fresh re ceipts Included a good many very decent westerns coming from ns far west nsash - Ington and Oregon. There sold at from * 3 to $3.50. A week ago the same cattle would have sold readily at from ? 3.-5 to $3.80. The demand Is nt present poor , the supply large , nnd prices fully n quarter lower than last week.
