There Ills first famous feat of arms was
performed. In carrying dispatches fron

among the crags in the foothills , some
distance from Short's destination. The

In 1877 and 1878 Luke Short settled in

Short , but it failed.
The merry gambler neither feared
nor cared for anything 13 mrtwrlght
could do to Injure liim. This embittered
Conrtwrlgnt and ho concluded to kill
Short. To this end hu adopted a ruse.
On February 7 ho called at the White
Klophant and , mooting .lake Johnson ,
Short's partner , at tlio door , said that
ho wanted to make tip with Short. The
la'tor ' l/ed the matter up in its.truo
light , and when ho wont out his gun
\vas loiNonod and ho was ready for
Courtwright's gaini ? .
"Lot's shako , Luke , " "aid Court-
wright , raising his right hand from hla
hip , where It had been resting. In the
hand ho held his revolver , and as ho
pulled the trigger Short shot , the
bullet taking oil Courtwi Ight's right
thumb and entering his sldo. Court-
Wright's gun missed tiro. Taking no
chances Short continued to pump loaJ
Into C mrlwrighTs body until ho foil

times and four of the bullets were found
in t' uirtwright's b uly. for this killing
Short was again arrested , hut speedily
freed , as C mrtwrightas shown to bo

In May. IS1 ? ; ) , u rival gambler named
A. H. Webster , al "ed by the city gov
ernment , conipolb 1 Luke Short to leave
1)nlgo City , where ho was at that time
running the Long Hranch house in part-
itirship with \V. H. Harris. Wolnter
'had a pull'1 with the authorities , and ,
wishing to got rid of a successful rival ,
10 Used it to get Short out of town.
10 got a law passed through the conn-
11 placing certain restrictions on gam-
ding. Hut it was only enforced against
short. Seeing that ho would get the
ivorst of it , Short closed his hou e and
uado a trip to Kansas Oily , where ho
told his story to a number of friends. In
a few weeks ho returned to D xlgo City
.vith . a strong following of armed cow-
: mys. Ho opened his saloon that day ,
ran It as he pleased and defied the au
thorities. I'Vmr of his friends' Winches
ters deterred tlio olllcurs from inte.rfor-
ng , and during the time hu remained in
Dodge City after that Luke Short owned
the placu.
Another instance of his determination
occurred iu Salida , Colo. , in the spring
of 1,881 ! . A foot race had boon arranged
between M. 1C. KoUleman , the famous
sprinter , and Harry Campbell of Loatl-
villo. The local sports backed the Lead-
villo man to win , while short laid thou
sand * upon Kuttleman , knowing his
ability. KottliMiian was "ll.xed1' to lose
by the crowd that backed Campbell , and
came in four foot buhind. Short saw
that the race was crooked and wasn't
going to lose his money that way. An
old-time sprinter was referee , and when
Campbell eroisud the tape ho was an
nounced the winner.
"What's that you say ? " asked Short
quietly , stopping tip to him. The referee
turned , to look down the b.irrol of a big
six-shooter.
"Oh , yes , " ho .stammered , "I mean
your man has won by a foot. "
An attempt was made by the backers
of Campbell to got possession of tluj bets
on the race , but Short and his friends
were too much for them , and were al
lowed to leave the town unmolestt'd.
Short's last shooting adventure was in
Fort Worth in January , Ib'.tl. ' Ho had
trouble with a man named Wright , and
ono night Wright piibhed the ban el of a
shotgun between the folding doors of
Short's gambling house and tjok a shot
at Short , who stood inside. The charge
of buckshot passed through Short's lett
thigh , indicting a number of llcsh
wounds , and took away the tips of his
left hand thumb and two lingers. Short
turned quickly and shot at Wright
through the glass door , hitting him in
tlio arm. Wright hasn't boon scon in
Fort Worth since.
