And yet Luke Short was all those. Ho
was born in Arkansas thirty-nine years
ago and , with his family , moved to Texas
when but a child. There his father Hot-
tlcd on a ranch near Fort Worth , and in
tills way young Short bucamo Inured to
the rough lifo of a cowboy and got his
training in the use of the revolver and
lariat. Ho grew up in the saddle , and
when but a boy boetuno noted as a ( juick
shot with the revolver. The o were
wild days around Fort Worth , and the
shedding of human blood was looked

In 1S7G , when the trouble between the
United States troops and the Sioux In
dians was on , Short entered the United
States horvieo as hcout , attaching him-
bolf to Genurul Crook's command. In
this capacity ho wont with Crook's ex
pedition into the lilack Hills country.
There Ills first famous feat of arms was
performed. In carrying dispatches fron
headquarters to a distant outpost one
day Short was attacked by a b.ind of fif
teen Indians. They wore ambushed
among the crags in the foothills , some
distance from Short's destination. The
first intimation he had of their prc enco
as ho rode by was to hear the crack
crack of their ritlos and the singing o
the bullets around his head. Patting
spurs to his horse hu rode straight h
tlio direction of tlio outpost , turning ir
his saddle to look for the redskins. Sooi
they appeared from behind tlio crags
nil riding straight for him. Short re
turned thuir lire and dropped the threi

ting Bull was captured.
In 1877 and 1878 Luke Short settled in
Dakota. In a camp there one night ho
was dealing Spanish monte in a gambling
toiibc. when two noted hor.-e thieves
went against the tramo and dropped all
they had. They then demanded the re
turn of the money , and being refused
pulled their guns. Short was too quick
for them , and when they were picked up
