been marked improvement toward the close

come in from the interior , swelling the bank
reserves about as much us tber have been
depleted by the extraordinary exports.
Nevertheless it is undeniable that the con
tinued outgo of gold causes more or leab up-
preheubion Thib is not because results thus
fur have been hurtful , but it is feared that if
the drum should continue tUroutrh the mouth1-
of .Tune und July , n point rauM be reached nt
which serious injury would result. During
tue entire month of Mnj it hus been thought
at vurious tunes by the most competent ob
servers of the exchange murliot that the
outgo of gold must practically tenmuate ,
and jet it hus gone on nevertheless At
the clis > e of the month , especially ,
there appeared a really extraordi
nary increase in tbe amounts of gold
held tithe banks of En pi and , Germany and
France , and the Batik of England sharply
reduced lib premium lor gold , and was In
fact umKiug uo offer whatever , and never
theless from some source a demand came

these circuuibtuncos it is reasoned that tbe
outgo does i ot appear to be governed by
conditions wnich ordinarily control such a
mnvetueut , uud on the principle tnat every
thing unknown Is viewed A-ith alarm , some
jit-rsous apprehend tbut the undetected causes
of the nuneinent thus far may cause even
greater drain of gold within the months tnat
are corning
While no ground for this apprehension is
teen , it is but fair to remember thut the state
of foreign trade was such a year ape as to
take a considerable amount of fold out of the
country in settlement of ordinary balances ,
uud there seems to be ilttla probability that
the excess of merchandise itniwrtiwill bo
smaller in tbe month of June or July than it
wus a year ago. In the month of May , on ac
count of the extraordinary movement of cotton -
ton , the returus will probably show a some
what smaller excess of imports than In the
same mouth of Ib'.KI , but of other products
generally there appears a decrease of exports
uud an increase of imports. The heavy move
ment of breadstuff can hardly bo expected to
come before August , and meanwhile the
outgo of cotton it quite likely to aiminisa
sharply The gold movement ei idcntly de
pends , to a great degree , upon the disposition
of foreign bankers and capitalists respecting
American securities. It Is probable that
they have been realizing , and causing their
customers to realize , to a considerable ex
tent during the past month , either because
thevero directly called upon to supply
gold to meat the Kursian demands , or be
cause they apprehended disturbances from
those demands , and wer * * fortifying them-
b.-lves against danger. The state of the great
banks Indicates that the fortifying process
hus been highly successful. How much
Husslii may yet demand nobody can know ,
and yet eminent tier in nn financier * who have
as good opportunities as anybody else for
fudging express the opinion thut the demand
hus virtually ceased. If iboso estimates uro
correct and the outgo of gold during Juno
and July should prove no groaor than the
ordinary trade accounts might call for there
is little reason to apprehend disturbances lu
the money market until tbo demand for
movement of the crops in the full.
