r TBDQ OKAHA DAILY BJ E : SUNDAY , DECEMBER 14 , 1890-THTRTY-TWO PAGES. ME CONDITION OF TRADE , * L Variety of Conditions Induce a Olosonoss of the Money Supply. M.ARGE SPRING TRADE COMING TO OMAHA. The Situation in Onmlm Fnlrly ln- cotiraKlnft KfTcctH of tlio Hoard- liift oflmrKC AmountnoT IWnncj- Work of Capitalists. Despite the fnct tlmt trade la Omaha ts very fair for the season of the year nnd the mild character of the wo.ither , inouoy is tightening and business men who have occa sion to borrow nro commencing to compUln. It Is not so close as to Interfere to any great extent with commercial a flairs , but suf ficiently so to mnko business inon rnthor cau tious about contractlns nny obligations not. strictly nocossary. If collections is to bo tnltcn as any Indication of the financial situa tion , money Is fully easier In the country than In the city. The business men of Omaha do not look upon the present closeness of money as at all llkoly to lead to nny serious , consequences , but on the contrary the feeling Is generally prevalent that It Is duo only to outsldo Influences , nnd Will Ixj , very brlof In Its duration. After the first of thoycar , or by February 1 at tlio latest , abettor condition of affairs Is anticipated , nnd so long as business men Imvo confidence In the outlook for spring trndo the present illght stringency In money will not hamper commercial transactions to nny great extent. The fact of the matter Is , while crops wore short In somo. localities and a total failure In others , there Is a largo section of jintry both In this state and In Iowa ore abundant crops were raised and where , owing to the high prices of farm produce , money must bo plenty. In such sections Jobbers nro antlcl- pathiR a very largo spring trade and there " "isno reason why It should not come to Omaha.Vcstorn Iowa , especially , will bo worked very closely nnd every Inducement possible offered to bring the people hero to buy their goods nnd to sell their live stock. The situation In Omaha at the present ttmo can ho summed up In a very few words , money n little close but business fair with very flattering prospects for an unusually peed spring trade. In the largo eastern centers of finance nnd commerce the situation during the past wccl : has had anything but n rosy hue. A number of old nnd well known houses have gone down under the strain nnd the air has boon full of rumors of financial difficulties and embarrassments surrounding supposedly strong firms. Fortunately , a good many of these rumors have been proven to bo only the Idle tales of busvboilles bent on compli cating the situation nnd forcing values of se curities still lower for some solllsh purpose. The situation In cities like Now York , Bos ton and Philadelphia Is peculiar In the ex treme. Money Is plenty , there can bo no doubt of It , for according to the government reports there nro now between $80,000,000 nnd $100,000,000 more In circulation than a year ago at this time. The whole trouble . appears to bo that this money Is being - * hoirded. : and hence is not available for the ordinary purposes of financial nnd commercial transactions. Capitalists took nlarm ut the November HumIn Wall street , nid : as loans came duo locked the money up .Instead of throwing It back upon the market. 'On the other hand Importers have been forced to do the same thing , though from different reasons. The vast amount of Roods now held In bond must bo removed by Feb ruary 1 , nnd this will necessitate the paying into the treasury of the United States many millions of dollars In duties. With a strln- Rent money market , importers could not af ford to wait and tnico the chance of being nblo to borrow the necessary inQnoy when the time comes , but they are being forced to board the money for the purpoao. From a financial point of view , capitalists ore doing the worst thing possible in locking up their funds , for they nro not only Injuring business In the east but they nro missing splendid opportunities for Investments , had they only the necessary conrago to breast the storm. To a certain extent the present flnanclnl scare , especially In Now York , is senseless , and the fact that rVdonliipes. beyond repair the credit of firms whoso stability in the matter of assets , other than nctual cash , is unquestioned , ought to bo sufllciont to cause n halt in the mania of hoarding. However , a scared capitalist is a * . hard man to reason with , and the business \ world will bo forced to got along " " "without " him until all show of danKer - Kor is passed. Ilo will tnon crawl out of his hole , bringing his money with him biul everyone will bo surprised to see bow plentiful money will become and how easily loans can bo effected on good security. At the commencement of the financial troubles In the cost the difilculty was appar ently confined to .tho speculators of Wall street , but It has since spread to such nn extent - tent as to cause business men In all lines to feel its effects. Accordingly reports from large eastern cities indicate a very quiet con dition in most lines of commercial business. In the metal trade , contracts for rails , track supplies , etc. , are still held In abeyance to a very great extent , thua leaving the situation In as poor shape as at nny pre vious tlmo during the past thirty days. The condition in other lines is not .much bet ter , nnd the sale of crude materials ts slow and prices rather weak. Manufacturers are curtailing their output to n considerable ex tent In order to prevent nny great accumula tion of stock. In the grocery business east ern dealers assort that trade is being kent within Just as narrow bounds as possible. As usual progress toward the end of the year induces - ducos curtailment of Investments , nnd this Inclination Is now much intensified through the dlfllcultlcs surrounding all operations on account of the closeness of money. The east ern market for dry goods has presented no _ . specially new features , the usual quiet at - this season having tirovallod in all branches of the wholesale trade. In some lines of Roods especially seasonable , the movement was fairly satisfactory. Taken all In nil , ip * eastern jobbers have Una very little in the f way of trade to bo thankful for during the past week. As noted nt the commencement of this article , trade in Omaha has been fair in most lines and about all that could bo expected under the existing conditions. Values have not shown much change and quotations arc very much the same as n week ago. This last assertion , however , will not hold good In some articles of country produce , as , for ex ample , in the case of poultry , whore n marked decline will bo noticed. The financial disturbances in the cast have produced at this distance little more than a rlpplo on the surface and legitimate business continues to prosper In Omaha , with overj indication pointing Unvu rd an Improvemenl tt no very distant date. They have been having much coUlor wonther tliero than In Omaha , although much farther south. .Tho oyster planters of Ioiift Isliind Sound am taking HmoHtono from the Hudson ilvur with which to mnko oyster boils on which the spawn can attach Itself. These planters llrst used all the oyster shell1 ! they could get from towns nlonu the sound and from Now York. Then they brought them by the shipload from Jlaryl-ind. The oyster shells , however , broke up rapidly and were washed away , and It was found necessary to resort to llinostonc , which Id found to inako a periiiunont bed. Until lately cotton waste has been cleaned and rollncd , but the grease extracted from It has been thrown away. It Is now found that the oil thus extracted can bo made , after very simple sroutmi'iit. to yield llrst class printing Ink. The cotton wtisto Is placed In steam chambers and a hnlutlonof lilsiilplinti' of car bon Is pumped Into the vessels. This disen gages the oil and grease , which Is then passed Into a series of heated coppers , from willed It emerges as varnish , from which tlio printing Ink Is made. TIIK IIUAUTY MAltKtiT.
