soldier , having enlisted iu the conti
nental army at the ago of 10 , aavs a

was recruited in Connecticut under the
direction of Benedict Arnold. lie
fought under Arnold atSaratogaxvhnro
ho was xvoundod. After recovering from
his wound lie was transferred to the di
vision of the army under Wash ,
ington and Lafayette. lie was among
thu hardy patriots who suffered in the
terrible winter quarters nt Valley
Forgo. The vicissitudes of the cam
paign had resulted in the losing by n
largo number of the soldiers of their
powder horns. From the heads ofsoino
of the cattle obtained by foraging about
Valley Forgo , the camp -butchers had
saved the horns , and tnoro xvas great
strife among the soldiers who had lost
their powder horiiH to obtain possession

Ono day , as General Washington was
riding by the camp , the situation xvaa

nearest to that number should have the
