CHICAGO PHODUOB MA HURTS.
CniOAno , Oc' . 21. [ Special Telegram to
Tup. BUB. ] Wheat was active , weak and
lower to-day. Cables were easy and oft a
fraction. Now York was slumpy and down
lo and moro. Receipts In the northwest nro
still enormous and the visible supply In *
creased 3,212,000 bushels , with tlio demand
from Importing countries nt the lowest point
and wltli Now Yoric only 34o above us , nnd
with supplies cro.vdlng to the front In great
masses. Thcro was llltlo In the situation to
cncouragu the Dulls , and tha result was free
liquidation on the declining scale of values.
The not decline for thi day wasJJfo for Do-
ccmTrtsr , nnd } $ a for Alny. Now York had n
sharp break early In the day , consequent
upon the soiling out of concentrated holdIngs -
Ings and the weakttess that was produced
hero by tb-j break was further Intensi
fied by ' 'tho report that the estimated
receipts -.Minneapolis and U ninth would
foot up to nearly 2,0'J3 cars 1,030 In Miano-
npolls nnd the vest In Duluth , The weak
ness In the cast nnd the mountainous re
ceipts In the west break the hearts of the
loncs'and the back of ttio market. It was a
day of weakness throughout. Local receipts
nro on the Increase , the arrivals for to-day
boIngS'JOcara. Tim receipts nt all the prin
cipal points east nnd west footed up 1,071,000 ,
bushels , and the shipments 330,000 busiiels ,
ot which only ' , ' 03,700 bushels went
pyt.fronl the soabord , The points of gioat-
csts'tiiist In the visible stocks were : Chicago
cage , * . ' ! } , < X)0 ) bushels ; Buffalo , 104,000 bushels ;
Duluth , 470,000 bushels : Minneapolis , 829-
003 bunhsls , and New York , 495 bushels.
The local speculative sentiment was bearish
from Un ( , Rtnrt to the finish , but there
was nevertheless nmnlfost a disposition on
part of sculpers to buy wheat early In the
day. Irresponsible authority had quoted
Hutchlnson as bullish for the turn , and , of
course , the " , tlo follows all wanted to swim
with big llsli. Early buyers turned sellers
ere long and made the descent moro procip-
Itlous than It would otherwise have occn.
IKcember opened at Sic and May at 83J c.
Liberal speculative purchases early stiffened
iho market , December going to 8l } @ $ lMc ,
and May to 34c. Thcso tlgures wore outside ,
and nftor they were reached there was a
steady drag. The market was pulled down
Ivs Ic , of thoroajouts , December displaying tbo
&rt'atost ' relative weakness ami stopping nt
' & ) a May striking the bottom Just 3 cents
'higher nt 83o. During the last dour values
hardened somowlmt , rallying nbout } { c ,
but the Qntil resting place did not In-
dlcato nny startling degree of buovanoy ,
October closing nt78 ° ffc. December 80) ) cnnd
May ntS3'4@S3c , or about } { o from the
bottom nil around. The aggregate volume
of business was largo , but loss so than the
nervousness nnd activity of the mnrket might
bavU i lad 'nany to expect. Norlbwcstern
markets were down , of course , and so were
: \ \ western markets , but New York was the
bead of the weakness , apparently.
I The corn market was depressed and about
Vi3 lower early In the day , and until the visi
ble supply llgurcs wcro officially given out ,
showing a reduction of stocks In sight of
1,122,000 uushols. This latter circumstance
produced n firmer feeling and caused a rene
ne t Ion of } @ } { a from the low llgurcs pre
viously prevailing. About the only noticeable
feature of the day's trading was the frco
selling of May by Hutchison around 32c ,
and ho was rather readily sup
piled by the shorts , who covered
freely at about the snmo ilguro. The cash
demand was light and prices lu that depart-
mnat averaged about , ' c decline from Satur
day's rullne. There was a gooddoal of busi
ness done in futures for nn hour nftor the
opening , but trading became slack and lackIng -
Ing In spirit later. October sold frdrn 30J
@ 30c at tbo opening to 30 @ 30yc , but re
covered to 39 aC und closed ut SQ3Qgc. !
May sold from 32JjJ33o to 32J @ 322fo and
closed nt 82Jf@32kc.
Oats wcro active , but weak , with prices
pushed down a further notch or two at onetime
time showing J o docllno. Receipts were
largo , materially exceeding the estimate.
I ' The other cereals were weaker , holders of
long oats were free sellers nnd thcro was
llttlo demand aside from that to cover shorts.
A largo business was dona lu May at a
range of 21 @ 21J c , with this month going
below the i o mnrK and December touching
lBC'$18a. Nothing of consequence
was reported as withdrawn from store , and ,
while local stocks wcro last week decreased
about 100,000 uusholo , the visible supply
showed a fair Increase of 03.30-3 bushels.
Noi 3 to go to store sold at 1717 , ' c , or the
.lowest point yet reached , and No. 3 whlto
for May delivery went nt 23o.
The speculative market for provisions was
profoundly dull to day , but llttlo interest be
ing-shown In the deal oven by local profes
sionals. As on Saturday , wheat had moro
attraction for room traders than anything
else. The pork pit was practically aban
doned , nnd on the morning call not a trade
was made. In view of the depressing pur-
roundliiKs larger receipts of hogs
than expected and lower prices for
raw materials , together with the
further break on the grain list prices for
the product exhibited u surprising steadi
ness. Lard was , In fact , stronger and higher
for tbo near deliveries , soiling up to $0 30 , or
7 ! o above Saturday's cloning ilgures. At
the stock yards there were 0,000 moro hogs
than expected and at the six principal packIng -
Ing points the arrivals aggregated 41,000
head , ngalnst 29,000 , head for the correspond
ing day last your. Live hogs were 5@10o
lower. A few trades were made in October
pork at $10.95@11.00 and the market closed ift
(11.00 , the same as Saturday. January pork
sold n "split11 higher. ThobullBsubscquontly
eased oft to $9.45. Judge Qresham refused to
grant ) ( ho injunction asked for In the Sawyer-
Wallace pork deal this morning and tha case
was dismissed. Tha decision had no percepti
ble affect on the market. Thcro was a mod
erate shipping demand for both lard and
meats , but only a limited business was made
public , most of the transactions reported being -
ing on Ilia qulot. Tha market closed nulot
nnd steady , moss pork showing a not gain of
7jO In November and 2'tfo ' loss in January.
Lurd futures closed 2i < < i7 > 40 hluhcr , Octo
ber showing the most strength. Ribs for Oc
tober delivery were 2K" higher and for Jan
uary about the sumo to a sbudo easier.

TUB UEE. ] STOCKS Weakness to a marked
degree proved to be the order of the day lu
tbe stock market during the forenoon. The
losses sustained Included specialities , Coal :
era , Grangers nnd Trusts. The opening was
not at all sensational nnd most of the Hat was
clllior steady or J @ } { per cent lower. A
decided weakness was developed In early
dealings , however , nnU material losses
wcro sustained In nil the ac
tive stocks , which comprised lew
than a dozen stocks , among ; which
wcro St. Paul , Northern Pnclllo preferred ,
1 nckawanno , Heading , Atchtson , Uurllng-

spicuous In point ot activity. Among the
usually active stocks Lackawanna nnd Hock
IMnnd showed the most weakness , the
former at 110 , bolne down 1Y , nnd the
latter at OC , \ } { per cent. Chloneo Gas led
the stocks of the regular list , however , and
It dropped IJf per cent to 53 ! Sugar Ho-
llnorlca declined 2,3 to ? 0Y , and Cotton Oil
\ } { per cent to12J . Tbo losses In
others wcro confined to fractions , but
after a partial rally the weakness was re
newed nnd Atchlton nnd Heading became
moro prominent In the dec-lino. Uoforc noon

to-nyV. During the first few minutes the
tomucr of the fODin was bullish and London
had buying orders In Loutsvlllo , Union
Paclllo und Erlo. The Interim was marked
by much bull talk , In which It
was claimed that all the bad
foaturc.s had been dlscountod , that the best
stocks were held by parties who could not bo
forced to sell , that the pools In Hurlntton ! ;
nnd other stocks wore ngatn ready to start
the upward movement , etc. All those things
availed nothing when the decline sot In.
Hates for money were stilt nt 8 to 10 per
cent during the day , nnd the stock market
did not recover from the weakness of tbo
forenoon. Indeed , the soiling by the bears
and bulls who Imvo lost hope , caused still
lower prices after 13 o'clock. At tbo close
prices wcro llttlo improved from the bottom
llgurcs of the day. Sugar went oil to 75 ,
closing with ' over n 3 per cent loss nt u } { .
The not loss In Cotton Oil was 2 per cent.
Chicago Gas closed 3 per cent lower at 52) ) .
The not losses In a few of the loading rail
road stocks were : Licltawanna \ $ { , Lalto
Shore ! . ; , St. Paul 1 > , Northwestern Itf ,
Burlington 1J , Northern Paclllo preferred
IK , Manlloba'2 > . While the short Interest
Is great , all hope of improvement depends
on the money market.
