THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , Wheat Fluotnates Within Narrow Limits and Improrea Slightly. BAD NEWS FROM NORTHWEST. Corn Soils Down PrACtlonally on Anticipated Heavy Hccclpts Trailing In Cuttle Dull Gctiornl Quotations. CHICAGO I'UODUCE MA UK 1ST. CIIICAIIO , Sc | > I. 5 , [ Special Telegram to the HKK.J The grain markets were dull and dragging until shortly before tlm close of the long session , when they exhibited consider able activity , accompanied by an advance m prices. Wlieat tluctuatcd within narrow limits , trade was light and the 1 o'clock closings show V < * J4C Imprwemcnt in prices as compared with Saturday ; The opening range was identical with Saturday'sclosings , viz : 70 ® 70 fls for Ogtsber , 7flfc for De cember and 79.$5e $ for May. Tue ranno for tlie session was 70 ® TOKc for October , 7o : for December , and TUKQbOc for May. The 1 o'clock quotations were 7070Xc for October ' ber , 74c for December and 70jtfc for May. Cable news was on the whole encouraging , but a halt In Atlantic port clearances Is noted. This cave support to the theory that foreign markets are tilled up tor the present , but It may bo stated In contradiction of this , or rather In continuation of the theory that foreigners do not propose to let their stocks run down , that buyltu orders for foreign account were received for a considerable aggregate quantity here to-day. News Irom the northwest Is bail and It eels worse Instead of better. The harvest weather throughout the spring wheat area coiihl not well bo nastier atid most grain that finds its war to market is In a damaged condition. Reports are practically unanimous that the yield Is less than antici pated. There is a minor Increase In the movement of winter wheat from lirst hands , but receipts at most of tne primary markets are still away below las : year and stocks do not accumulate rapidly. Corn opened weak and sold down fraction ally on anticipated heavy receipts. The crowd estimated the arrivals for Saturday and to-day nt 1,000 cars. The count made it ( WO , and alter this fart became known the market hardened and remained tlrm with an advancing tendency to the close or the prln- pal session. There was noticeable letup In the shipping Inquiry , and the difference be tween September and October widened He , September displaying a greater weakness than more deferred deliveries. The opening transactions In October were at 4l'4c and UD to 12:30 : p. m. the ran to was 41u)41Tc- ( ) Then the market turned up anil closed lirm atIlKc , the outside , November opened at 41c , ranged at 41u"Jl ( , c and closed at the top. May opened at rauged tit 444.- > > lc and closed at the top. Speculative Interest centered In October and Miy. : The market was destitute of excite ment. There was only a moderate activity In the .speculative market for oats , and nMilo from the tinner reeling developed , which Was rather unexpected in view of the weak ness In the cash market , no new features were developed. Initial trades were , ' < c under Saturday's closing liirurei for leading futuies , but the early weakness soon gave way to a better teeling , and there was an ad vance from bottom prices of W < l'v , the Im provement being well maintained until the close of the session. in ptovlsions the Interest exhibited was conlined mainly to short ribs for September and October delivery. In lard there was a little stronger feeling tlmu at the close Sat urday , and in pork for January , the only month traded In , the price was advanced lOc. September and October short ribs showed a marked manner of unonslness developed by the September stock statement.wbich showed an unexpected reduction In the supply on hand. The shorts tor these months made something of an ell or t to cover , and under this buying prices advanced - ' ( frUSc over Saturday's last quotations. For September short ribs sold from S8.40 early up to SS.OO , and for October from ? 8. : ! ? ! unto SS.60 , closing at SH.MS for September , and SS-MM for October. September lard closed at SM2H. The product for next winter's delivery was only moderately active , which was also the condition of the general cash business. ( Special Iclegram to the BBI.J CATTI.K Trade was very dull. ' You might safely say , " said ncool and con servative salesman , "that the market has not been as weak and unsettled as It la to-day for nearly two months. Just look at the sit uation. There are fully 30,000 cattle In sight on the various distributing maikets from New York to Kansas City. There are 12,000 Mn Chicago , 4,000 In St. Louis , 3,000 in Kansas City , 0,000 in BuiTaio and 3,000 la New York and then there Is Cincinnati and Indianapolis , say : ! , OUO more. Too many cattle In sight for Chicago to make the pace , " concluded the speaker. New York was reported very dull und lower. The latest English advlcea are extremely discouraging and the general trade is In a bad way. As to prices , they were , as a matter of course , lower. Just what the re duction will reach before the day is over no one seemed to be able to estimate. Some placed the decrease at from 15 to 20c on the best and 2ft to Sue on the other sorts. Native butchers stock was down to low water mark. Texans were slow and lower. There were at least 0,000 Texans and runners umoim the fresh arrivals.
