Heavy cattle continued to sell badly , and the

In Jersey Central. The stock was up 1 percent
and the talk was that the old bull party In it
were preparing a bull scoop which would
carry It up 10 per cent. Uould stocks were
rather Inactive , but were not at all weak.
The railroad earnings reported for April In
almost every Instance showed largo gains ,
and this served to help along the buying.
The boom In stocks started early In the day
and lasted until the close. Rock Island loit
part ot the early advance when the story
about consolidation with Its leased lines was
denied by ofllclals of the company. North
western held Its advance about the best of
anything on the list , and closed at the top
ligures for tlio day. The story was that
C.uumack nnd his following coveicd a big
line of shorts In St. I'.iul , Northwestern , and
L.ike bhore. London pi lees were all higher ,
and some buying oidcrs from abroad were
received Just before tlio close. 1'rlces at the
close were about 1 percent above the open-
Ing. The total sales were about 250,000
shares.
