THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SUNDAY MARCH 27 , 1887-TWELVE , PAGES. SATURDAY MffiKET FIGURES , The Price of Wheat Moved Up Solely On Kerahaw's ' Bidding. THE CLIQUE STILL A MYSTERY. Trnnsnotlonn In tlio Provision Pit Al- toKOthor Utiovciiitnil-Cntllo mini * n ens Active Hardly KnoiiRh Hog * ) to Make n Market. CHICAGO PRODUCI3 MARKET. CnirAno , March aO. | Spcclal Telegram to tlio UKI : . ] Kcrslmw , tlio leader of the clique brokers , opened wheat up this morning at 8Ic. l.ato last night on tlio curb the -irowd was selling wheat fairly at fOKc and It came down tills nioniliijf expecting to izet under this figure. The price was moved up early Blmply by Kcrshaw's bidding , llo needed to buy very little grain. The sentiment Is as jnl.ied as eter over the purposes of tlio clique , nnd as to whether It Is buying now because It wants wheat and believes It cheap , or be cause It must buy to make a market to sell on. If the former wore tlio case the crowd cannot aeo why tlio buying Is not done secretly Instead of opeuly nnd by Kershaw. Tlio latter cannot get much wheat without the hcabcrs tailing right after him and ad vancing the price. Thn crop situation Is beginning ginning to cut a more and more Important llfOirc. The extraordinary dryness of the month Is becoming so apparent that It Is no longer a matter to bo argued over , and If It lasts ten days longer will afford the bulls ( treat aid. The clearances at Jthe seaboard 647,0)0 bushels were so heavy that the wheat pit , after their arrival , needed no clique sup port. The market stood of It self , and the figures on the "vis ible decrease" began at once to bo Increased. Just before the close Kershaw came Into the pit and apparently had his cus tomary 1,000,100 bushel order. His bids quickly advanced May from 81 > < c to Sl c , where It closed. It Is said that three separata pools were marto up early this mornlnit to raid wheat and break the prlco down under the SO e figure , where the clique has stood guard. If it is true that these pools wcro made up , It is certain that they gave up the raid. They were probablv frightened off by big clearances. A New York broker was on the floor looking for cash wheat , llo came on here , it is said , supposing that the clique would sell him cash under the market If ho would onlr guarantee to ship It , but ho found himself mistaken. He offered up to the mar ket but wouldn't pay commissions , and did not got his wheat lie had engaged fifty cars of Lake Shore at 20c. In corn the receipts were largo enough to make tlio price easier , but no w and then the corn pit cuts loose from Its own statistics and goes up or down sim ply out of sympathy with wheat This was why the Mav option was so steady to-day at ! % @ " # . 1'rovlslons were altogether un eventful. This stock ad vanced % per cent In the forenoon , presum ably duo to Gould's pronounced bullish ut terances. Missouri Paclllc was a trifle ulglioi but Inactive. Gould's friends assert tuat he Is In earnest when he predicts a higher range for all uls active specialties In particular and the whole list In general. It Is an open fact that during the past two or three weeks ha lias been a buyer ot all securities with which his name and Influence are Identified. The bankstatement to-day was expected to bo un favorable , but when It came In the market Improved a little on the surprise that it was no worse. It was stated that the presidents of trunk lines would meet In New York Tuesday and try to get tlm Grand Trunk to cancel Its notice of withdrawal. The most conservative and best railroad people In that city do not regard with alarm the action of the Grand Trunk road , oven If It decides to temaln on the outside. According to n Cleveland dispatch a I.ako Shore official with Information said that within llirca months rates would be demoralized worse than for years. Large holders of Pullman In Boston liavo little confidence In the rumors ot an extra dividend. The market held up well ail day. There were no feat- tires to afternoon trade , tlio advances of the morning being generally well maintained.
