Tlio inquest held in the ease of David

the scabbard hindered their movements , "
but didn't know that they were in llio

to couple cars with , but that it was tin-
hrndv. and ho'd "sooner lose : v linger
than'his life , " as with a stick n switch-
man's hands were bafo , but he thought
his lifo was not , as there
wes danger of the scabbard
becoming fast to n ear , and the snitch-
man being drawn under and killed.
That in wearing the bcahhard it caught
in the car on a man's mounting one and
was liable to make him miss ins grab ,
and it was in the way In nil cases , On
cross-examination he said Unit since the
accident to Knhns 'no one wears them
or uses them , " and that there is more
danger to a man in wearing and using
them than without.
A. K. Loncks , another switchman ,
heard ll.e ears that Knhns was to couple
thump together , and turning around saw
thu ear jolt as if going over something.
Soon ho saw Knhns , alter the ear passed
over him , roll from tlio track as If trying
to gel out of danger.
The evidence went to show that all the
switchmen in llio yards hero prefer to
use their hands in coupling , oven at the
ri.sk of losing a few lingers.
The jury brought in the following ver
dict :
An inquisition holdonal , Council DI nil's ,
in Pottinvatlamie eounly , on the 1st dav
of December , A. D. 1885 , before 1) . M.
Council , coroner of said eountyl upon
the boclv of David R. Knhns , there lying
dead , by the jurors whose names ate
hereunto subscribed. Ttie said jurors
upon their oaths do say that the saicj Dr.
K. Knhns earne to his death from inju
ries received while coupling ears in the
Union Pacific yards at the transfer on
Salurdav , November28 , nt about .1 o'clock
n. m. Wo further lind that while there
is no evidence lo show that the accident
was caused by the nsing of the coupling
stick and belt , in the opinion of the jury
that while they may .save accidents to
hands , they endanger the lite of every
one nsing the same.

The extent of the injuries is not known ,
but they are thought lo be very serious ,

lo arrest MelCann. One was accordingly
sent , out last evening. There is a consta

must have been out of town at the lime

Work on the Dituli.
The work of clearing out the now
sewer ditch scorns no easy tame. There
are about , thirty teams and lifty men now
employed , and the ditch has been cleared
out as far as Stewart's packing house.
The work proceeds slowly on account of
the peculiar .situation and condition of
the dirt. It is very hard to get loams to
work in the dituh. Ihey gulling mired
easily. Tim mud is thick and solid , If
there could bo a little more frost the
work would proceed more casilv. It is

the residents of that part of the city need

A lighted match fell into some varnish
