STOOKB The fonturo of to-day's market was
the remarkable strength developed this after
noon In the Gould Blocks. The market thia
forenoon was very dull , and In the first hour
very weak , the decline in that time as com
pared with the closing prices of last evening
ranging from i to g per cant. It was a littln
after mid-day that new lifo was Infused into
the dealings in Western Union , The street
was liberally supplied with rumors , all tend
ing to show that an understanding had been
reached between the Western Union and
Baltimore & Ohio telefraph companies by
which they were to operate either in harmony
JB two separate companies or under ono con-
colldatod management ; or In other word ; ,
that the Western Union bad eocurod control
of the Baltimore & Ohio. It is known that
the Baltimore & Ohio lines wore altered to the
Western Union some sixty days ago , and that
tha terms were not accepted. It is now sug
gested that negotiations have since led to
bettor results. The Western Union rose In
the afternoon from C9i to 72 , ] and closed J
lower. The strength in the afternoon was
accompanied by increased activity in the
active stosks , but the rest of the list was very
dull and practically featureless. As tomorrow
row will bo observed as a legal holiday , the
week on exchange closes this evening , Prices
now as compared with thn closing quotations
lost Saturday are - \ \ per cent blghor for New
Jersey Central , 3 ? for Western Union , 1\ for
Heading , and 2 for Louisville & Nashville and
Missouri Pacific each , while Lnckuwanna Is
down -i per cent.
