" HUUG KHY 15XTII/101U1INA11Y. / Al'utlcnt at St. Vinuent'a IlOHtiltnl Has Ilia Ilrnln Sowed Up. From the Now Ycrk HcrtlJ , The brief account in Friday'a Herald of the oxtraoidiuary operation performed Thursday afternoon at St. Vincent's hos pital upon Michael Hoffman's brain has ozcitcd such wide-spread interest , both among the member * of the medical pro fession and the public in general , that a Herald reporter called at the honpitnl Ins to veiling to ascertain a fuller history of the case. "Hoffman is getting on finely , " said Dr. Kueno , the hcuso surgeon , "and will bo perfectly well in a month from now , although five years ago or oven ono year ego , for that matter his lifo could not have been saved. This shows what rapid strides the science of surgery is making toward that time when human skill shall have obtained such a mastery over the workings of disease and accident that the lifo of man can bn prolonged to its natural limit of 100 yearn. "As the Herald has already stated , Hoflmau was working Thursday at the bottom of the elevator shaft in the build ing No , COS Greenwich street , which has boon erected , The elevator was bong Just ng used for the first time and the man who run it apparently did not know that Hodman was below him , for on the downward trip of the elevator ho lot it decend with great rapadity to the base- incut , knocking Hoffman down and pin ning him between the floor and the bottom of the elevator. When the screams of the unfortunate man apprised him of what ho had done ho pulled the rope and the elevator roio just tha in stant when a further descent of half im inch would have instantly killed Hull' man. man."As it was , when thn latter wan carried to the hospital it was found that the end of ono of the eight screws , half an inch in diameter , which ho had been putting into a heavy board at the bottom of the shaft , had been farced into his head to the t brain. The skull was badly fractured and six largo pieces wore removedCleav ing i four square inches of the brain ex posed f , This was bad enough , but the dura membrane , or membrane covering the t brain , wna ruptured , and the gray matter of the brain protrude ! a dittanco of half an inch. There seemed to us to be J no earthly means of saving the man's lifo 1 after this discovery was made , until Dr. J Litkin suggested that the membrane bo sowed up. This has never before been attempted , as tbo dura mater is as as thin and delicnto as the lining of an egg-shell , and death always ensues from meddling with it , Nevcrtholuis.the sug gestion was followed as a dernier resort. "Tho protruding portion of the brain was carefully pushed back , and the mem * brano drawn together and fastened with several stitches of catgut , which will soon bn absorbed. The wound was then dressed - od in the ordinary way , and there ho has lain , with n trepanned hole in his head as largo ns one's hand , and conscious and in telligent as you or I , and with every chance of being perfectly well in a few weeks. " "Would you call such an operation trepanning ? Is not that term used only when a plato of silver is inserted into the skull ? " asked the reporter. "That is ono _ of the greatest of the pop ular delusions in regard to surgery , " said the doctor , laughingly. "I may bo put ting it rather strong , but to my knowl edge and belief there never was n plato of silver inserted in the skull of any human being. I do not believe it could bo pos sibly bo done with success , and besides , oven if it could bo , of what USD is it ? The skull , as in Hoffman's case , will soon reform - form and cover the opening with a growth which , though at first like a gristle , yet in a year's time will bo nearly as solid as " ) lie rest of his skull. Bub it was n deli cate piece of work , uncovering such an area of a man's brain puthing back what protruded through the ruptured dura mater , and then drawing this membrane together and sowing it with catgut thread. Wo could see the minute arteries of gray matter of the brain pulsating with each boat of the heart. Altogether , it was the most difficult case of the kind which has boon treated since St. Vincent's Hospital was opened. " The glory of a man is his strength. If you are weakened down through OXCCHBVO study , or by early Indincrotlon , Allon'n Uraiu Food will permanently restoio all lost vigor , nnd strengthen all the muscles of liratu and Body. ? 1 ; G for 95. - AllAN AN EXCITING GAME OV > GAUDS. No ? Well , there is neatly hid den nway in that little biskct a dog , " "A dog In a hand-satchel ? " queried the reporter , incredulously. "It's truo. It is a little scheme juito common now to beat the railway company and do away with the necessi ty ot separating the lady from the lap dog. It is against the rules of the compa ny , you know , to carry dogs in the pas senger coaches. They ore consigned to .ho baggage cars , and taxed $1 DO per icad between hero nnd Philadelphia. A jreat many ladies nnd almost all actresses carry a poodle as a traveling companion , and the separation between them on the cars U sometimes very directing. But with this contrivance , you sco , they can keep their pots with them fastening them in the basket when the conductor is about. " "A very tolerable dogstory , that" sug gested the nowsgathoror. "Yes ? Well , there goes John Abel , baggogo master. Ho can toll you a bet tor " and Mr. WakoGold pointed out a form in blue that disappeared in the crowd around the depot. "What does ho know about dogs ? " "Ho topkthroo of them over to Phila delphia with him onco. and found them anything but pleasant company , 'fhoro were two bie blood-hounds belonging to an Undo Tom company that had been showing horo"and the other was a largo Newfoundland. The Newfoundland was tied by a rope to the brake in the middle of the car , and the bloodhounds one at ; ach end of the car. Both the Uncle Tom dogs began to show signs of bad blood toward the Nowfounkland shortly iftor the train started , and soon worked , hcmiselvcs into a fierce fsonzy , threaten- ng every moment to break their fast enings , "Abol was a prisoner , unable to escape from the car while it was in motion , as , \io \ dogs were fastened at both doors. Lie could just keep out of their reach so eng as their chain hold. I don't need any diagram to explain how far from pleasant it was to stand holding on to iho side of a car going forty miles an liour , and just out of the reach of two crnzp dogs , thecr fastenings liable to break any moment. 1'iie train was an express , and a long way between stops , and I believe Jack was held in this pos ition for something like an hour. When it did finally check up ho did'nt loose much time in jumping out of the side door , making his way to the coaches , and bringing the owner of the blood hounds to the baggage-car , who shorten ed their rope ana revealed to the badly- scared baggage-master that each oj the dogs were a thin wire mask so thin as to bo almost invisible , and yet strong en ough to prevent thorn from biting. Ho explained that they always were these in the play in order to insuao Eliza against being torn to pieces. " "Dick Fox took Joe Emmett's $4,000 dog over with him from hero , " continued the story-tellor. "Tho manager who brought him ( the dog ) to the train in structed Dick in case the giant mastiff become fractious , just to kick him in the head and ho would bo all right. You have soon the dog ? Ho is just about as high as an ordinary man. Dick looked at him and said that if ho didn't seem in clined to keep the peace ho could have the car to himself. But the dog was aa gentle as a lamb all the timo. "Speaking of dogs , you remember Harry Wingis' adventure with thu Kirnlfy Brothers' baby elephant ? Of ciurau you do ; it was illustrated in thu Now York patera The elephant stood at' one end of the car , and after thrown.g his trunk about in every direction final ly dropped it on the atovo. Until Majors died the surgical profession has rarely had an opportunity to study the earliest processes of repair in frac ture.
