George Pointdoxtor was before the court yesterday on the charge of helping himself to too much smoked meat at the Ohio house , where ho was employed. Ho was acquitted. To-day being Washington's birthday there will bo no session of the public i < schools. Wonder if the board of educa \l \ tion will deduct 0110 day more from the teachers' salaries. The report that a can of dynamite had exploded at the Florence cut-off was finally accepted as the explanation. , Some of the friends of Mr. and Mrs. John Lindor shrewdly planned and sue- cussfully carried out a surprise party nnd heuso-warming ab his now residence on Wednesday night , There was a largo and merry gathering. The man Connor , who was arrested on suspicion Wednesday night , ho being found trying to sell A diamond ring , was. reloaded yesterday. The ring proved to bo bettor glass than diamond , and no claimant appeared for it. J. P. Kelley , aged about 7. ) years , died yesterday afternoon at the residence of his son-in-law , W. P. Miller. The remains will bo taken to his old homo , Columbus , Iowa. Mr. Kelley has boon an invalid for nearly two years. The filling up of the avenues lias cauiod some of the intersecting streets to bo iloodod with water , the culverts not liaving boon yet fixed so that the water can drain off. At St. Francis1 academy there is n regular pond covering the whole street. Some man from across the river sent two green Germans with a team over to this side to cut and haul wood yesterday. The Germans were arrested for trespass , and , as they nor the team returned , the owner came over to see about it , and suc ceeded in getting himself arrested on a like charge. Charles Best , the omnipresent , nevor- effervescing city editor of The Council Blulfc Herald , had an assistant arrive yesterday evening , and weighing OJ pounds , The little follow commenced business at once , and the item furnished by him calls forth Uio congratulations and well wishes of the fraternity , Oae of the former police officers of the city had au appointment , or thought he had one , with a lady whom he was to meet on a certain street corner. While he stood waiting in the howling wind , late in the evening , and shivnriu ly clinging to a lamp.post , the lady was , corily seated by a fire , chuckling over the way the had fooled him. The masquerade given last evening at the Ogden house by the married ladies WM one of the most brilliant society vwU of this season. It was largely at tended and a very enjoyable affair. The Other DoltiRs ofttm Aldermen. At nn adjourned mooting of the city ouncil yesterday afternoon , the mayor resided , nnd Aldermen Siodontopf , Mo- lahon , Wood , Eiclior and Keating were resent. Alderman Siodontopf called attention o the now patent nosszlo shown up at the ate test of the water works , brought ever rom Omaha , they being specially needed fighting fires. They nro commonly nown as "sprayers , " or "firo fighters. " [ o moved that the fire committee bo uthorizod to purchase four of these nnd wo lighter ones , Carried. Alderman Keating , of the fire commit- oo , reported that they had not located n oam nnd hose wagon on lower Alain Lroot. There was ona stable they could ot at ono dollar a day , including food for 10 team. It was opposite the Crystal mills. The committee was instructed to c'oso ' lie arrangements. City Engineer tastovim presented the following report : ? o the mayor and city council. In com * ) lianco with your order of the 20th inst , lirccting mp to provide for the moasur- mont of six simultaneous streams of water from the hydrant designated by 'ou I have to report that the necessary Apparatus for observing each of the six trcams at the same tiuio was placed in losition in roadines for the required test it 10 o'clock this a. m. The language of the ordinance is that .lie company "shall furnish the said city 'or ' fire protection a sufficient supply of water except in time * of unavoidable casualties , so that with fire protection apparatus turned on , it shall bo able to discharge or throw at least six streams of water simultaneously out of ono inch lozzlos to a height of ono hundred feet n any part of the main business portion ) f the city and at least two'such streams to a height of fifty foot at any point on the line of its mains. " I have to report that the six streams measured this morning fully mot the requirements of the ordinnnco , a full stream of water having boon maintained during the test at a point in excess of LOO foot from each hydrant. Examintv- ; ions made on n prior tear , at the high school and at the north end of Oakland avenue , which points involve the capaoi- ; y of the works to throw two simultane ous streams fifty foot high at any point on the line of its mains , demonstrated that the service was fully performed on laid tostr THOMAS TOHTUVIN , City Engineer. After placing on record the proposition being the rates of puttinginsorvico pipes , ho following resolution was presented : Resolved , That the official test of the Council Bluffs City Waterworks compa ny's works , hold February 21st , 1884 , is satisfactory , and that the same and the tompany's works as constructed and now in successful operation in the city , are in accordance with the requirements of the company's contract therefor-nnd as such are hereby accepted , and the mayor is directed to officially notify the compa ny of the acceptance thereof by the city. Alderman Siodontopf moved the adop tion of the resolution , and it was unani mously adopted. On motion the notice served by the waterworks company January 10th , infer - for mi rig the city that the works were completed , was ordered placed upon the record. On motion of Aldormau Eiclior the marshal was instructed to notify team sters drawing dirt to go down Bancroft itroot instead of Main street , as the dirt Falling off the wagons would have to bo removed from Main street , while Ban croft street needed filling. Alderman Wood called attention to ; ho fact that citizens were using the hyd- ants as hitching posts for horses. On ais motion the city attorney was author- zed to frame an ordinance making it a misdemeanor , and fixing a penalty. The fire committee was instructed to [ > roparo a report , for presentation at the next mooting , on the rumoval of the two Hydrants from Glen avonuo. The committee on streets was instruct ed to have a culvert nut in at Broadway nud Sixth street , to drain oil water which stands there in rcat quantities , Aldorraan K ating called attention to the need of sewerage , ou Broadway es pecially. Ho moveu that the committee on streets and alloys , and the city engi neer , inquire into the advisability of using tile drainage , for temporary use at least , for house sewer service. Aldennan Siodontopf moved that the city attorney prepare an ordinance re l- quiring all property owners on streets lO DO paved to put in aorvico pipes for gas and water. Carried. The city marshal was instructed to no tify property owners on both sides of the alleyway , between Broadway and First avnnuo , and between Pearl and Main streets , to remove the nuisances there at noo. An officer was sent after him , and ho will now have a chance to explain hi queer actions. Campbell is said to have bomo a good reputation , aside from being 'a ' little wild , " and it is a Hurpriao to his acquaintances that ho should go into liotao stealing in any form.
