Speculation in grain and provisions continued through the week with considerable vigor. The trading was largely on local nccount , outside orders being absent. The general public is not expected to enter the market nt present by the most conservative commission , although many look for a bulpo in prices this month which shall induce trading by speculators in the north west. Prices until the middle of the week tended downward. On Thursday spirited buying sent up prices from 1to IJc , the largest impro\oinent being in wheat. The acti\ity was not , however , repeated on sub. sequent days nnd on the whole the range of prices was small. There is no change to note in wheat. It still continues to arrive in largo quantities. The warehouses are nearly full nnd will shortly ba overflowing. The t amo conditions exist in corn. By Fob- mary first thorp will bo'room for no more , but ( storekeepers will probably build cribs for it. The feeling is bullish on corn , and about even ly divided on wheat. Proiaions were generally firm. Moss pork guctuated over a range of CO cents. The packers who usually manipulate- market to HUit themselves are bearish , it la said , in order to get down the price of hog . The latter ar- live in by no means largo numbers. General business shows small change. The market in depressed for dry goods , boots nnd shoes , clothing. Iron and crockery. The cold weather has slightly stimulated the rate of woolenn. No immediate improvement Is looked for , and by many business men the out look for the coming year is pronounced far from promising. Bank clearings nro smaller than usual , owing to thasa factx. Currency HJdpmonts to the country were not largo. Money is easy on good collateral nnd mercan tile paper. CHAIN ANU 1'ttOVlHIONS. CIIIOARO rllODUCE. CHICAGO , January 4.
