The stack market opened with a firm
tons to share speculation and there was a
sharp advance in some Northwestern prop-
erlie , which had a favorable effect upon
the list Generally. Thli upward move
ment was led by Northwestern preferred
rising 7 per cent from the closing pries of
Saturday to 172 and common 4 per cent to
148J , Thtso quotations ara the highest
yet made for preferred and within 1 percent
-cent of the highest for common. St. Paul ,
Minneapolis & Manitoba was t.oxt in point
ot advance , suddenly rising 5 per cent to
145. Milwaukee i St. Paul sympathized
with this improvement and sold up to
121 ? . The remarkable strength of the
stocks named attracted much attention
and was the cause of comment , Southwestern -
western shares were firmer and 4@ ! per
cent higher thnn closing quotations Satur
day. The gro.it advancj in noithweetcrn
roads undoubtedly started the market on
the upward turn and led to n more bullish
feeliug generally. After midday North
western preferred reacted 1J per cent and
the remainder of the list i@3. Later the
market became active nnd strong , but iu
the last hour was less active than earlier
in the day. However , Omaha slocks
further advanced , the remainder of the
list falling off a fraction from the highest
figures of the dry. The feature of the
market at the close was St. Paul & Omaha ,
which advanced on largo transaction to
54 f ; for common and to 111 $ for preferred.
Tbo remainder of the Us : was steady at a
fractional reaction from the highest point.

mors thut the road was to be leased to or
