In 1878 tlio amount of bullion shipped from Londvilln ninountcd to three nml oii.lmlf inillinn dollnrs. lit 1870 it nnmitniod to ten ntidono-hnlf inillionf ; in 1880 to over fifteen millions The last mentioned ycnr was that of the i reat boom , nnd when the Fryer hill mines wore all shipping Isrguly. For 18SI the bullion shipments amounted to n little over thirteen millions of dollars , n slight falling off , to bo sure , from the shipments ot the previous ypnr , but not coneidonxblu whun ono takes into consideration the docnwse in the rolumo i f businrm t1irouihout ; thu country. Up to 1882 , then , the principal buaini > * 8 of Lvadvillo WAS holding , goiur.vlly ept'iikiiiR , its own. And upon entering 1882 the smulturs wore in a bolter condition than over before. Their capacity was generally increased , the machinery nnd furnaces improved , and there wns u i ubundanco 0 ere on hand. In comparing , nisi , t amount of bullion shipped tor the lirst ( jnarter of J881 , tlioro is dis closed thu fact that notwithstniul- ing till the reports of Lo.idvillo'a devenoracy , the amrunt for this year promiios to exceed that of tlio last. In 1881 , the bullion for tlio flint quar ter amounted to $ ! 1 0 ! > 7,000 ; for the firfit quarter of iltm yiar the iii > uros ate S-l 058,000. But the first quarter of this year nndcd April 1 , nnd since then the Grant smelter , which last your produced bullion to thoamountof § 3- , 077,014 , him been burned , and will not bo rebuilt. Many have stated this fnct as a < i argument to prove that for the next quarter the bullion output will fall much below thu uvorairo. It made no little commotion nt lint in Leadvillo when the proprietors of the Grunt emeltor decided not to rebuild , but the excitement , and , indeed , the alarm , is falling iiivuy , and in conver sation with prominent mining mon in Leadvillo I have found that there art ve y few now who boliovotlio city will sutler boetiiiao the smelter goes nwivy. The remaining emulting companies have saved the ci'y from any roit loan , for they will almost all increase their production f icilitiea BO an in the nggrcxitto to more than make up for thu deficiency caused by the removal of the Grant smeller. The enlarge ment of the American mni'ltcr is no.ir- ly completed. Tlio Arkansas Vallej Smelting company will erect two now stHcliH , and HO will the L.i Plata. So far , then , as smelters co , then ia no tear but th.it Leadvillo crtn pro duce ao much bullion . as tivor. Tlu only quoation rem ttniiift is , can thu smulturs bo supplied with ere ? 1 believe liovo they cm bo. It ii more thai likely that the present production wii ! bo fully maintained , nnd exports wh < are familiar with the hills about Lund villo say th.it the present production can bo greatly increased. They con tend that the OIM Hhoots of Ciirhonatt and Fryer hills have still ti ( 'rent distance tanco to run liejoml the points alro.iclj opened and explored , buforo thej roach the breaks , which have beoi determined by careful surveys. Theeu surveys show that that part of the shoots on the hills which ia still un touched covers a larger urea than is now covered by the mines knowp as producers. For instance , take the Morning and Evening Star mines o Carbonate hill. Their producing ca pacity is mncio out by the area of the ere shoot embraced in their locations and BB the area of the ere shoot beyond , - yond those minus is at Joaut four times as largo as that covered by the IMorn- ing nnd Evening Stura , it is only a matter of arithmetical calculation what the possible production of that area will bo. 1 have boon unable to find u inino which is not to-day working. They are not driving in their work , but are steadily producing , and are prospecting for now oro. When the aineltera nro increased I have no doubt but that , the mines will produce all the ere ncceesary nnd nuedlnl. It is cf cuurao impnahible to sny when all the nhootH will become exhausted , bill at present tlieto is no reasonable and no valid danger that they nro near being - ing HO. I cannot believe but that Luadvillo will produce this yc.ir fully as much bullion as she did last year , and possibly moro Slio has the ere , nnd she will have the smelters. And turning from minim ? to busi ness in general t L ° : i < , > illo real estate , for instnu1 c i . not find that there in uuv dioji ii prion. Houses and uuno. in K1" " ' IncatMiis runt as hi h as ever : good property is strongly held , and although there ia no "boom" in building , nnd although there is perhaps nothing doing in the/ way of buying , selling nnd erecting now blocks , still , thuru am only u few vacant stores or houses. In biiRin there is no complaint made by thu merchants. As u rule they are fairly contented , mid though there aio aomu wno sigh for the days when tluy could makn fiom 100 to " 00 pur cant , , still they generally are ready to ucci'pl thu state of ofl'urs und bo contented with reasonable profits. And I ho liovo that this question , this reason able. profit buamuHs , is just what hati madu the present talk. Hen forget that no city can "boom" forever , an Li'udvillo did in 1880 ; and they for get that sooner or later competition in 1 town will bring down prices to a reasonable liguro. This is what ails Leadvillo competition , The mnall concerns , the day-old , .never to-bo-a- year-old , flashy places have been ivuedod out , The largo houses have : ut thu eiiuller ones out of the market. [ f two houses do a million dollars' vtprth of business wo know there will be far less confusion .luiti if there were a dozen houses loing altogether the sanm amount. The two houses will do it orderly and juietly , And this ia what in being done m Lcadville. 1 am told that .lip volumu of business being done his year is nearly as great as that lone last , and yet bucuuso there is ess commotion made , and bucuusu there are not so many Hinall firms and lot such an apparent rush , thaimpros- on ia out that business is very had. The mistake ia too often made by not calmng n sober , settled , legitimate jusinoes town ; it will never ugain be the hurrying , hasty , half-cocked Lead- villu of years ago , Business is to-day dawn on a basis moro solid than any t over had before , and if the popula tion is not increasing , and even if it ia dropping away a little , I think the people of the town may bo contented with what they have left. They may bo euro that only the worthless houses nro leaving ; these loft arc the fitibstati tiiloius. * * * * Lend villo never seems homelike Thi.ro nro no houses which look itivit injt People romnin in the city bo < cnuse their money i invested there , or they rue wnl.'iiig a fortune. No one stuvs from choice , nnd none expect U loninin after their money is obtained. The residences nro all cheaply built , nnd the suiroiindim > snro nncnred for , And yet the country outside the cilj limits has certain beauties. I hi mountains extend in long chains ii every direction. Their" sides nro wooded nnd their summits nro never free from snow. Near Londvillo nro two artificial lakes known ns thu Ever green lakes , nnd to these _ n grand boulevard extends from the city. The drive to the lakes , only six miles away , is n favorite ono with all classes , ami the Inko themselves nro arranged in r very attractive stylo. North ot Luad villo is another section of the Statt much enjoyed by the people of this cnroonato city. Thu Douver it Uu Gr.indu road has extended n branch t < Itobmson , 1C ikomo nnd Wheulor'A , nnd to reach either of theao towns urn hits to ride up thu Arkansas river val ley and over Fcuimmt pasa. The Arkansas hits its soureu somowhcro nt thu head of the valley , nnd there is much pictmciquencss to the Bceno. Fremont pass is nt'iirlj l'J,000 feet nbovu the sea level , aiid is thu highest point reached by any railway in this country or in Europe. High up among those mountains there is nuvur any summer. In thu vnllojn , to bo atire , thu snows molt nwny bj July ; but near nt hand , upon the mountains , grout banks remain during all the year. Now und then onu sees in a trip over this pass and up the valley u ohultercd nook where u timid ( lower rears its tender head , tensing for lifj ngitinst thu terrible winds tint blow from the treolesi mountain. 1 lives for a day or two in the choerjean scuno nnd dies nt evening , nippud by the cruel frosts. The very liver it self , which winds down the valley , looks cold , and thu scattered pools ro llout in their dark depths only the wintry-locking mou'idinc. There u no gentle beauty to the scone ; all is rough , rocky , cold nnd simply grand. And yet thosu who live in Leudville Hijoy going over Fremont pass. Per hups they enjoy getting away from their homely houses and homeless homes , or from Uio sickening tqunlor that must greet them DO often in their city. city.Loadvillo then , to-day is n prosper ous mining camp , situated in a cold nud cheerless , yet grandly nppeniinu country. That it will inctuaso in size , I doubt. 'Unit it will conimuo to hold ita own , I bulievo Its pupuU turn is about 18 000 , nd it will bu very likely to ontinuo at that figure. It will never bo an attraotivo city , mid yet it will always bo an intonating ono to look at and to study. Its in dustry and its history are alike at tr.ietivo. Its population will bhvuj bo ; i lloating one ; men will come and make their money nnd go nw y , and others will to low them and stay as short a time as possible. Its evil lifo will always continue , for miners enjoy such recreation an they can find in gambling IIOUHCH. Thu booming d.iya and thu days of wild excitement uro over. Fortunes will never again be made in u minute , as they wore once. Success will only comu to those who work hard for it. Loudvillo has passed the romuntio period of her life. From notv on she will grow moro and moro practical , subor and aenaiblo , but she will for many years yet bo the most important and the largest mining town in tLj 'Jnited Suites.- Inorediblo. The other cviii.iug while hinoking a cigar with one ol my old friends , who him neon , lu.Kl . , and travelled a great deal , 1 was told of an incident that occur red at Smargon. Thu colonel of n certain Russian regiment ferociously tyrannical and may say merciless toward his soldiers , was in the Imbitof treating this human flock like a pack of brutes , liu dis ciplined with the knout ; sentencing men to whippings for having one but ton inaulliciently polished ; whipping n non-commiB&ioiicd cflicer for onu stain on his cloak ; striking veterans ol liorodino in thu face for saluting too slowly ; Rending poor wiotchcH to Sibe ria for giving too freu un answer. In short during the lapse of years this colonel had madu himself BO detested by his men that he reaped a frightful vengeance from seeds of hatred hu had Quo morning during p.irndo ho sud denly saw file off from the regiment u company of soldieru bearing , instead of muskets , those long rods which cut deeply into thu Hush at every blow. Nevertheless , hu had given no orders ! Theru was no soldier to chas tise. tise."Who "Who is that forf" ho demanded. A grenadier advanced from the ranks , and replied with terrible cool ness ; "For theo ! " The entire regiment , noncommissioned sioned olIicerH and soldiers , were in the plot. The whole regiment was present at Iho tnanblo spectacle , Thu colonel was seized , his uniform torn oil' , ho was tied down in a wheelbar row and wheeled up and down before tlio ranks of thu grenadiers , armed with rods , all of whom struck and in sulted him. Thu nfiicors who attempted to aid their colonel were immediately seized and bayunets pointed at their throats. Some were taken away ; others gar- roted. Only onu soldier attempted to Uko part with them , Then a ser geant , still pallid from the effects of lija last whipping with thu knout , put lid musket to thu soldier's loin pi o und uluw his brains out. And all thu regiment saw ita colonel .iaaa under the rods , When it was ull over they opened H din-oven. The colonel was flung int'j ' t , all bleeding , together with thu olli- cers who had obeyed him. And when ; ho furnace w s well fed , thu soldiers icated it slowly , slowly until at taut hat hideous , heavy and revolting smell of burning flesh arose in thu air , which the savages of thu Russian frontier inhaled some days ago nt a Jewish cemetery nt Smnrgon. An imperial courier bore to the czar the news of the mutiny Niche las listened , bojomo white , but said imthiiig except to order four batteries of nrtillcry to Novgorod. Ton dnyn sftor a nlnte-haircd and - gray-inns- Inched major-general , r.coompanird by n single aid-do-camp , knocked at the door of the barracks which the soldiers had never loft since thu nuir- dor of their chiefs. Then nil nt once from every far sp'.ro , all the great bells began to toll. The Cossack horci'inen withdrew. Only the unarmed infantry remained upon the square , with folded nrms , waiting. Then there came n lung low roll of drums , it ml with it from nil the ave nues leading into the cqu ire c.ime volleys of grnpo like iron-hail. Then nothing wns heard awhile hut the thunderof the o union in thnt city , otherwise silent us a cemetery whun men , women and children , kneel- ii.g before their holy images , were [ raying for the soldiers they were shooting down in the square And luring an interval in the cannonade , n liymu rolled up from the square ; tor the stildiera were dying with the prny- ers of their childhood upon their lips.
