Harris , po-ntor of the LJaptiat church from the Twen ty third psalm and revelations , after which a touching nnd fervent prayer was offered by Mayor Whittle , the ovnngoliat. liv concluding his prnyer Mayor Whittle prayed for the efforts mnde to bring the perpetrator of the dastardly deed to justice and that he might atone for his crime according to thu laws of the land. Smith na a citi zen nnd a1 Christian gentleman. .Re ferring to the fact that never in the history of Omaha had the city been BO profoundly moved. Mr. Shurrill said that thu great ugsemblago before him was flomuthing more than a tribute of sympathy , it was a tribute to the character of A man who for many years nnd lived and moved in the com munity and who by his manliness , moral courage and purity of character had won an lionoml name in our city. "Lot it be remembered for his city"eaidMr. Shorrill , "what they do respect not wealth , position , popularity , but char acter. " The Bpenkor then alluded to the great interest taken by Colonel Smith in young mon , nnd his un wearied efforts to assist them in need and misfortune. A short itddrezs was then made by Mr. P. 0. Himo- baugh on behalf of the Young Men's Christian Association , of which or ganisation Colonel Smith was thu first president. Mr. Lutubertson opened by aying that if Judge Dundy could have trusted himself to speak on the occa- lion ho would out of thu fulness of hia have berne glad testimony to his high regard for Col. Smith as an officer and as a man , and his great love for him as a friend and brother , but that the 5ail calamity had so prostrated him that ho was forced to delegate the duty to another. As nn officer Col. Smith was affable , pntlont , incessant in toil , courteous and strictly honest. An a federal official no plapuo apot of dis honor was over found on his hands. As a citizen ho was public spirited , generous to a fault , and bold to express press his honest sentiments. Ho believed lievod in law anil social oidor. There was reason to suspect that ho had fal Ion a martyr to his principles. There was no answer to thoargumonts which ho used except the assosflin'a blowv Mr. Lambortson paid n high tribute to the spotless homo life of Col. Smith , which ho'said was as pure as the flowers whiclr Jjo upon his bier , QKXKI11L MANDKKBON , on behalf of the Grand Army of the Republic , was the next speaker. lie naid that the distinguishing character istio of Col , Smith waa uovotion to duty. It was this which prompted him to enlist as a private at the outbreak of the wnr , and it WAA this that made him the cxcollent soldier that ho was. His norvico , extending throughout the entire war , was principally upon the stnfl' , Trhoro ho brought to the duties of the oflico the same clear head , clear-lighted order in business that were characteristic of him inci"il life. From the organiza tion of the Grand Army ho wns an nctivo member , ever true to it * prin ciples of fraternity , charity and loy ally. No cell over made upon him for relief for a needy comrade or the widow and orphan over went unheeded. His loyalty to duty extended beyond the war and prompted him tp face other nnd greater dancers.
