son.In grains there has boon a strong niar

In provisions pork product * continue to

In cotton prices lm\o been irregular ,
but at the close thoru was n decline.
In wool , butincss has not been Inrgp , but
a good feeling1 prevails and the opinion of
thti beat judges is that prices will advance
rather than decline. Values h.no been
relatively higher thnn at the scabo.ml.
Leather continues dull ,
The boot and tOme trmlo lias been Inac-
the.
the.Butter
Butter presents few features to grades.
There was not enough received to xnpply
the demand.
The chceso market was a little moreae -
the , but the demand for export \\as light ,
merely enough to supply actual needs.
Prices firm and unchanged.
In Brnzll coffee the outlook Is not very
flattering 0.1 the market abroad is much
depressed. Operators hero are rather shy
of transactions. At the same time thcio
Is a moderate consumptive demand , with a
steadier marketer moderate operators.
In tea * there is n wmit of confiduncu in
the stability of the marktt , which is
mostly in fax or of buyer * .
In raw pug.irs prices were well main ,
tallied. The consumptiue demand re
mained goo I ,

CINCINNATI * ! ! I1USINKHH JIKVIKIV.
CINCINNATI , September 30. From all
sources reports come of an increasing vol
ume of buslucss. Except in bnnki > , the
demand for money is not active but rates
ate unchanged. Exchange is the name as
last ueck. There have been heavy ship
ments to Chicago to meet the losses incur
red by Cincinnati speculators in wheat.
The aggregated amount ot louses nro es
timated at from a half to a million of del
lars.
lars.Grain
Grain hero has been firm all week , and
prices have advanced.
Whisky is Ic higher , and there was an
effort to put it up Ic to-day but fai'ed.
Flour has been unusually octlve and ad
vanced under a heavy demand from the
south.
Groceries have boon exceedingly active.
The dry goods business hab increased in
volume , with steady prices.
Clothing nmnuf.ictiirrra report an in
crease in bueiiiCHs since last week , and suy
this month will ehow a better business
than September of last year.
Leaf tobacco has shown a firmness in
tone , and higher prices have beun obtained
for the better grades.
TIIK I'.VHT WKKK IN CIlICAdO.
CHICAGO , September 30. Business for
the past week has been considerably inler-
inpted by the day of mourning for Presi
dent Gar field and ono day's business II.IH
been more completely blotted out of finan
cial and commercial history of this section
than _ has over before been recorded. The
clearings for the five day , Saturday esti
mated , will reach 844,000,000. ,
Money has been very active and very
strong , chiefly because the operators on
'change , of wnotn there are now thousands ,
were in urgent need of it and rates were
strong. Eastern exchange was at a dollar
discount. Business among jobbers is ani
mated and there has been a substantial
gain over prices and sales of , a year ago ,
Groceries like all other kinds of living
materials , notably flour , potatoes , dairy
products apd vegetables , are strong and if
not actually higher , give promise of an ad
vance in the near future.
Wheat experienced a boom of nearly 8c.
The corn market was next with a rise of
5 cents and otitri were not far behind with
a rise of 4c. In each case the lower
prices were recorded Tuesday , the first bus
iness day of the week , and the highest to
day. There was the greatest irregularity
in the options which sometimes ran paral
lel for a few hours and then diverged wide
ly from each other. Fuilures and rumors
of failures caused a sensation toward the
close , but the market v/cnt pretty steady
upward in spite of every adverse influence.
Provisions wcro fairly steady without
cny _ great disturbance of values althongh
their tendency wan dowmvard.
The prices for grain are the highest for
many years higher than for ten years
except in cases ot well developed corners.
Ono of the amusing features of the deal in
that some of the more enthusiastic mem
bers of the Cincinnati syndicate , who He-
cured such handsome ' ' "
profits by 'bulling"
August wheat , have been badly bitten at
their own game , nnd are now ehort
themselves on October wheat and are suf
fering D.H a result of their eagerness to
make money , The majority of the clique
are believed to have pulled out with their
profits.
The receipts for the week wcro 3,321-
000 bu ; shipments , 2,207,000 bu. The re
ceipts again largely exceed the hhipmento
ana are about the samcux last year. The
elevators are filling up with grain early in
the season , and oven the low rate of Ic
per bu for com to Buffalo does not draw
grain away , for prices are higher here than
at any market to which Chicago can ship.
Some people predict n disastrous break ,
but there are no sigusof ono yet.
JN HT. UIUIH.
ST. LOIHH , September 30. Notwith
standing the sad event of the early pait of
the week which produced a universal fuel
ing of sadness and sorrow , the condition of
trade in thin city and tributary country
bus been unusually good- and its voliuno
exceedingly large. Alt branched of the
mcrcantllu business and nil lines of inilin
try 1mvo been puwhed to their fullest capac
ity. It was feared some weeks ginco that
the drouth would seriously curtail the in
terior trade and thus affect city jobbers
and manufacturers , but HU far there has
been a falling off In general trade or special
branches and everybody seems to .bo again
anticipating a large and profitable IJUH !
ness ,
The demand for money exceeded the
bupply and many f.nt-claaij applications
for loans wore necessarily rejected. Thu
rate ruled firm at K percent , for call and
time. New York exchange is abundant at
* 100@1 50 discount per 81,000.
Metal * have been steady with a much
larger buitiiiestf than at tha same tlmu hist
year.
Sheet Iron in ntlll scarce and firm.
Drugs me active with no important
change.
Fltili have been HiiuclaUyactlveand there
IIOH been some difficulty In keeping the
stocks up KJUH ! to the extra demand.
The movement in groceries in very heavy.
Refined sugars were reduced ftc , " but prices
were generally firm and < > " soma articles ,
ucli o > > soup , candle * , xtan.li and rice ,
vances have been made ,
Dry goods have been fairly Loomed , the
volume of sale * beiu ? unusually great aiu
many very largo MH were made. All
cotton roodn firm wllh an upward tenden
cy. Woolen goods strong with a general
advance of alnmt 5 per cent.
Roots and shoes , huts and caps clothIng -
Ing , hardware and all olhcr branches of
the jobbing trade have IIMH active mid
price * satisfactory.
On 'cliango grain rulfd higher with a
otroiu ? fprculntlvo demand , especially for
November nnd December opti"ni > . Fluctu
ations worp numerous and at times there
won considerable excitement , Intt the ten
dency was upward and each dr.y scored an
advance , At the close to-day , however ,
there was a vvcjikcr feollng and prices
dropped from Ic to l\o \ I clew the highest
point.
Hour Advanced In sympathy with
whcnt , bnt there has been no speculative
movement.
Cotton was steady , with a ullghl ad

The receipts wcro again greater tlmu for
