the past week has been considerably inler-

clearings for the five day , Saturday esti
mated , will reach 844,000,000. ,
Money has been very active and very
strong , chiefly because the operators on
'change , of wnotn there are now thousands ,
were in urgent need of it and rates were
strong. Eastern exchange was at a dollar
discount. Business among jobbers is ani
mated and there has been a substantial
gain over prices and sales of , a year ago ,
Groceries like all other kinds of living
materials , notably flour , potatoes , dairy
products apd vegetables , are strong and if
not actually higher , give promise of an ad
vance in the near future.
Wheat experienced a boom of nearly 8c.
The corn market was next with a rise of
5 cents and otitri were not far behind with
a rise of 4c. In each case the lower
prices were recorded Tuesday , the first bus
iness day of the week , and the highest to
day. There was the greatest irregularity
in the options which sometimes ran paral
lel for a few hours and then diverged wide
ly from each other. Fuilures and rumors
of failures caused a sensation toward the
close , but the market v/cnt pretty steady
upward in spite of every adverse influence.
Provisions wcro fairly steady without

The prices for grain are the highest for
many years higher than for ten years
except in cases ot well developed corners.
