The Season of 1880-81 Opens
Up Well.
Things Past and to Come.
The season of createst eocial enjoy
ment is rapidly advancing and balls
and parties , diuncis and euppera arc
taking the place of picnics , festivals
and lawn socials , prominent among
the events of the past week was the
ball with which the Standard club in
auguratcd the season of 18SO-81.
About sixty couples were in attendance
and the evening was ono of ( treat
pleasure to all. The music on this
occasion was furnished by Stein
hauser's splendid orchestra which is
engaged for the season. Among seve
ral new pieces played , the composition
of the leader , was the "Standard
Club" waltz-quadrille.
Every alternate Tuesday tbo club
will hold one of its parties until the
season closes in February with a grand
masquerade.

Many presents were received from
friends in all parts of this state and
Wyoming. The happy pair took the
Rock Island train to Chicago , whence
they go to their home at Cleveland.
On Sunday evening last there was a
pleasant social gathering held at the
residence of J\Ir. \ Wm. Lewis , corner
of Twelfth and Castellar streets. The
occasion was the celebration of the
crystal wedding of Mr. and. Mrs.
Ldwis. A bountiful repast was spread ,
to which the guests did ample justice.
Miss Fannie Lewis delighted the patty
with several fine selections on the
piano. Vocal and instrumental music ,
iuterEperBod with reminiscences of
days gone by , made the evening a most
enjoyable ono. The present * , which
were handsome and useful , were nu
merous. At about midnight the party
departed for their homes , wishing Mr.
and Mrs. Lewis all the happiness and
prosperity possible , and that they
might live to colubrato their diamond
anniversary.
CECILIAN CONCEIIT.
ThivOecilian Choral Class are pre
paring to give a concert in the Actdo-
my of Music on the 22nd of the prca
ent month. It is the aim of those
having the arrangements in charge to
make it the mnaicil event of the sea
ECU. To that end the Quest talent in
the city including both vocal and In
strumental hss been secured. Tickets
are now on sale.
COMPANY G SOOIABLB.
Next Friday evening the § 00 gold
modal for target prize will be presented
to Company G , at a social parly to bo
given on that evening at the armory.
The prize is to bo shot for annually.
FOUUE KALL.
The second annual grand ball of the
Onlalia police force is announced for
the evening of October 27 , and al
ready several hundred tickets have
been disposed of. The success of the
ba'l given a year ago not only encour
aged the force to make it an annual
atl'iir , but so pleased the guests that
there will never bo any trouble to fill
the largest hall in the city. Masonic
hall has been chosen as the place at
which to assembb this year , and we
predict a good attendance and a good
time for everybody.
FAREWELL HOP.
A complimentary hop was given
Wednesday evening at Fort Omaha to
Lieutenant Robertson , 9th infantry ,
and wife , who were about to leave for
Fort McKinncy , the post to which the
lieutenant has been transferred. The
affair was gotten up by the ladies and
officers at the fort , and was highly suc
cessful and pleasant.
MISCELLANEOUS.
The tenth annual ball of Darant
Engine and Ilose company , No. 1.
will take place at Masonic hall , Mon
day evening , November 1.
The first grand fair to bo held by
the Omaha Ladies' society will bo hold

A train of twenty-five cars left the
depot in this city at 2 o'clock yester
day afternoon , bound for Chicago. It
will run at the rate of 25 miles per
hour without stoppage. [ Lincoln

A special train with the officers of
the B. & M. on boari ran into a
freight train near Humboldt on the
southern division , on VTednesday
night while going to Atchison. The
rear car of the freight train was cut
almost in two , and the engine lost its
smokestack , but fortunately there were
no dangerous injuries to those on the
train. Mr. Touzalin , Mr. McConniff
and L'jw Cropsey were aboard.
Passing1 Away.
Mr. A. R. Orchard died Saturday
afternoon at 4 o'clock , aged 71 years ,
Ho was a native of Kentucky , and
came to Omaha from Indiana in 185G ,
where ho has resided ever since. He
was ono of the origins ! organizers o
the Presbyterian church , in which for
many years he held the office of elder.
ETc was an honorable and upright cit
fzen , acd was greatly respected by al
who know him. He was the father
of Mr..Samuel Orchard and Mrs. Wm ,
Preston of this city.

The existing revenue laws provide
that upon the tirat Monday in Novem
ber all real estate up in which state ,
county and city taxes have not been
paid for the previous year shall bo of

treasurer no notice of such being

quested to read sec. 89 of said laws in
reference to the collection of delin
