Acollcgc annual is one of tho things needed to wake
up the Inmates of this steady-going institution. If there
is any reason why we cannot have one, it has not been
reported to theso intellectual hoadquartcrp. We movo
that we all move tow rd doing something to secure a
good, jolly, nonsensical annual for the end of the present
school year. Now let some one hazard a second and tho
Student will put the motion.
The first prize contest in the history oi the institution
was held by the Palladiau society, in the Opera House,
last Saturday night. W. A. Baldwin, who had como
from his home for th purpose of taking part, was unable
to speak on account of sickness, but a beautiful floral de
sign prepared for him by the ladies of hia class made him
feel that his jour, cy hud not been in vain. The Orators
and their subjects were as follows: "American Hum
orists," Elton Fulmor; "A Goddess iu Exile," Will O
Jones; "Is Mind Material," R. L. Marsh; "An Italian
Monk," A. G. Warner. The first and second prizes were
taken by Warner and Marsh respectively, and the other
two contestants received floral designs from the young
ladies of their classes that were almost as much in value
as the prizes. Good work, a good audience, and good
humor will make any future contest, as they made this
one, a success.
Never buy a copy of a picture. All copies are bad, be
cause no paintcriwho is' worth aslraw ever will copy. He
will make a study of a picture he likes for his own use
in his own way, but he won't and can't copy; and when
ever you buy acoby you puy so much misunderstanding,
of the original, and encourage a dull person in following
a business he is not fitjfor, besides increasing ultimately
chances of mistake and imposture. You may, in fact
onsldcr yourself as having purchased a certain quantity
of mistakes, and, according ;o your power, being engaged
in dissembling them. This, advice can be very ap'ly
applied to Cigarette Smokers. Tlie original Straight Cut
Cigarette is the Richmond Straight Cut brand, and pur.
ch users are cautioned to observe thattheSiguature of Allen
and Gutter is on every package, and not be deceived by
gross imitations.

The variety theater at the corner of O aud 12th streets
is to be improved to the extent of $30,000. In the nnmc
of all that is good and noble, let the house be venti
lated. Audiences who have endured the stench and the
bad air of the old house will undoubtedly arise in a hodv
and kick a hole through the wall if the architects of
of the revised edition of it do not provide an ingress
and egress for air.
